As the demons picked at her exposed skin, the pain faded until there was nothing. Her mind focused on one thing; a burning within her core. She fed it the anger until it glowed. She fed it with purpose and loss of those she had loved. She fed it until it consumed her; until the light pierced through the black horde that fed.
The demon king watched with amusement as the horde began to burn away. Each one screaming until there was nothing but ashes. Before him stood his daughter. Large, red wings spread outward as she slowly lifted from the ground.
“I wondered how long you would last.” he finally said. A grin spread across his dark lips. “Now that you’ve ascended, come take your place by my side, daughter.”
Zadie’s eyes burned. “I am not here to rule this world with you, father. I am here to end all of this. I am here to end what you’ve started.”
The demon king threw his head back and laughed. “Of all the things I’ve seen and one, you expect me to be afraid of you?”
He stood, extending his arms outward. “All I ever wanted was to have you rule with me. To spawn my new army so that we can lead them to victory over Heaven…”
The thought disgusted Zadie. “Never.”
The demon king smiled as a single line of drool slid down his chin. “You will birth my new army… willingly or not.”
Those words had been no more uttered when the demon king changed. His size grew with ungodly power until he towered over the stone temple. Without hesitation, Zadie darted between his outreached hand- and threw the backpack as his other hand grabbed her in mid-flight.
“What is this?” the demon king asked as he picked up the bag.
Those would be his last words.
“A weapon.” she replied before coughing up blood. No more than a heartbeat was all it took for her inner core to react. Even as she felt his hand begin to crush her bones, Zadie’s own power overcame the pain. It burned through his hand, ripping away the skin. The light expanded until it reached the backpack, setting off a chain reaction that consumed everything in a blinding flash.
