Sophie mind danced across the images of her friends. One minute Gethen was holding a knife to Keefe, No! She wanted to say but no matter how much she wanted to scream her mouth was shut. But the Keefe morphed into another person, Fitz. She squirmed and thrashed but nothing could happen. Faces flickering throughout her sedated mind from Biana, Dex, Wylie, Linh and Tam, to Alden and Tiergan, and eventually her mother, Oralie.
She wound up hearing, despite her screams, other people talking. The whispers they grew, until it was a mountain of chatter, making her stop thrashing for a minute and apprehend what they were saying.
A FREAK! Some voice said while another shrieked, Who's side do we know she's really on? And on top of all those voices, mounting up a mountain of raised suspicions flowing through the air, she heard her own voice. But it wasn't exactly her voice. She was right here, and she heard the second Sophie's voice, but it had hints of tiredness and desperation. There was also a undertone of hardness to her pitch, like she was tired of all the complaining, all the negativity towards. Regular Sophie was weary of that, but she never let it show to others, or never tried to at least.
Second Sophie wore black leggings and a plain white tunic with a brown cape cascading over her shoulders. Her blond hair was cut at shoulder length, and she looked like a older Sophie, or a picture of her in the future. She saw Older Sophie, lean in as if speaking to someone and announced, "I. . . Don't know," answering the question. Sophie wanted to scream. How could she say that, she was always on their side! She knew that she was made to destroy the Neverseen, but why would she falter on sides?
Sophie racked her mind through all of this, but she saw Older Sophie double over, gasping in pain. Screams pierced the air, as a blasting sound erupted throughout her mind. Older Sophie clutched her chest, and Regular Sophie to her horror, found a gaping hole through it. She fell, her eyes wide open, and thudded to the ground.
Everblaze. It could tear through anything even flesh, but she when she tried to move she realized she couldn't move. She was stuck. She wanted to scream at the dead Older Sophie, but she couldn't move.
By craning her neck, she tried to get a better view of the killer, but something or someone was pulling her down. She wanted to scream, afraid that this was her future, all for nothing, but she pushed those thoughts away, as she felt herself float away. Laughing echoed throughout the air, the kind not in happiness but in vain, a cruel guffaw.
"You will never beat us," A deep version of Fintan's voice blathered through the air. She wanted him to show himself, to inflict on him, but only his voice echoed in her mind. "There's nothing that you have," And with a snap of his fingers, the place was silent.
Nothing moved, she saw the eerily silent place as nothing moved. No breeze, no talking, no creaks of benches or footsteps. It was like the whole place was frozen.
Increasingly in seconds, she felt a fluttering feeling on her fingertips. She watched in confusion as she saw the tips of her fingers wisp away in ash, desiccating more of her body every second. Sophie watched her hands flow away, and then soon her arms, and her legs. Gasping for one last breath as her body fished away to the air, grains of ash aspiring above her. She had one vivid thought before waking up. What the hell is happening?
