Before turning in for the night, I decided to tell Ben what all happened to Thomas and what I told him. He, of course, decided he also ought to help with it since he knew a thing or two about self-confidence. I couldn't help feeling a little discouraged myself, "You really think we can help him?" I asked. He put a hand on my shoulder, "Well, we want him with his knickers in one piece, don't we?" he asked in that thick Scottish accent of his, "So, we get the boy on his feet a little and help him start walking. Incompetent or not, he's gotta be able to walk." (metaphorically speaking).
True to his word, he set to work with my assistance teaching Thomas to believe in himself more. Thomas kept an eye out in case George and Roberts decided to do it again. Ben always advised him never to run away when they looked like they were going to wedgie him again, but face them head-on. Tell them confidently that what they were doing wasn't right and he had two to back him up (Ben and me).
Thomas started putting these into action, even practicing his posture in his reflection in the water. He would even practice alone or in front of us. He got better with each practice he undertook. I told what happened to Smith and even had Thomas practice in front of him. Smith was deeply impressed and very proud.
We couldn't keep his back in practice for very long. Eventually, he would have to do it on his own. Ben payed me to spy on George as he plotted the next wedgie scheme he and Roberts would do to Thomas. Oh, Gosh! I thought, a hanging wedgie! That was the worst! They would take your underwear from behind and hang you from somewhere high up. The good Lord only knew how you got down again. I snuck back as soon as I heard enough, Say your prayers, Thomas. I thought to myself.
