"We were temporary friends anyway, this was bound to happen." said Max as he stared blankly at Davids phone. Neil had a stunned look and Nikki looked at Max, hurt. Max glanced up, realizing his mistake "I- I didn't mean it like tha-" "No, no we've heard enough, you're right, we're just temporary friends! right Nikki?" Neil hissed. Nikki solemnly agreed with the curly haired boy. Neil huffed, straightening his sweater, and hopped on the bus. Maybe science camp wouldn't be so bad without Max. "Nikki! you believe me right?" Max pleaded. Nikki stared at him, then turned. "Bye Max" she said in a harsh tone. She followed Neil on the bus and plopped herself in the cold leather seat where Neil was sitting. Max watched as the bus left the drive way of the camp with a pit in his stomach. He watched as the bus turned the corner and disappeared. He stood there. Alone.Nikki kicked and swung her feet, not being tall enough to sit down and have her legs reach the floor of the bus. Neil glanced out the window with his head in his hands. Nikki sighed and looked up and over at Neil. "You don't think Max meant it right..?" She asked hesitantly. Neil didn't bother to look at her "I'm sure he did. He didn't seem to care when we complained to him about leaving and I'm sure he doesn't care now. We were just 'temporary' friends" Neil hissed, saying 'temporary' in a mocking tone. Nikki looked back down at her lap. Temporary. The word stung like a hot iron to the arm. Max surely didn't think that, right? They had gone on so many adventures up until this point. There was no way Max just couldn't care. Nikki clutched the rims of her shorts and dropped her shoulders. "There's no way, we've done so many things together, we've gone on so many adventures. We've even tried to escape camp together! We're like siblings or a wolf pack, all three of us! There's no way he just stopped caring!" Nikki shouted, standing on her seat.
Neil tried ushering her down "Nikki, sit down. We're gonna get in trouble!" he whispered. Nikki huffed and plopped back down. Neil was quiet, a bit stunned by the girl's actions. He'd never seen her act like that. It was unusual for her personality, but everyone gets mad from time to time. He sighed, finding sympathy, and put a hand on her shoulder. "Look, sometimes people just stop caring about other people, maybe because they're selfish, maybe because they've lost interest, but for whatever reason, you shouldn't overthink it. Its Max's loss. Not ours. Maybe he just wasn't a good friend to begin with." Neil explained. Nikki frowned. Neil continued "I honestly hope Max didn't mean it, I'm just being spiteful. But if he did, we still have each other, and there's nothing stopping us from wreaking havoc at this new camp" He grinned. Nikki chuckled a bit and sat up in her seat "Yeah..you're right..thanks Neil" She smiled.
