Chapter 3

I don't know why but the next morning I expected to go downstairs and see my sister in a cult robe. Instead, Shay had on tall heeled leather boots, jeans, a white tank top, a black leather jacket, and a huge pair of white sunglasses on her head. Her hair was up in a high pony and I thought what I knew every guy that passed her on the street would think.  Note to self: my sister is hot.
"Hey, Chan. Dad had to go in and work today. Sorry, that means no famous Saturday pancake breakfast. I actually have to go to town hall and speak with members of the Society. You'll be okay on your own?" Shay asked as if she hadn't practically been planning to kill me the night before.
"Ya, and Shay? We're sisters right? We can talk about anything. Just out of curiosity, can you answer a question for me?" I asked with caution.
        "Anything."
"What exactly does The Society do? What are you really training to be?" I stared into Shay's carmel eyes. Her mouth dropped open. She quickly shut it. I watched a grin spread across her face.
"Oh Chantelle, I am training to be a spy," she emphasized her last word. Then she smiled and shoved me. She started laughing.
"I'm serious. What does the Society actually do? What are you going to do," I knew I was pleading. I knew Shay could tell. She smiled again, a devilish gleam in her eyes.
"I'd tell you. But I'm afraid if I did tell you then I would have to kill you."

I spent that weekend avoiding Shay. I knew I should have talked to her. I just didn't know how. By Monday morning I put on my old school uniform. I was just smoothing out my plaid skirt when I realized that I wouldn't be going to Chartom East High School. I was going to be going to Healer school. I threw on my black jumper. It had a v-neck and looked gorgeous paired with my heels. I threw my hair in a clean bun. To be honest, I completely regret my outfit choice. I really had no idea what I was expecting.
"Hey Chan! I made your favorite pancakes for breakfast! You've got a big day ahead of you," dad said as I walked down the stairs.
"He's right. This is the beginning of the rest of your life. Don't mess it up," Shay said shoving a pancake in her mouth.
"Alright, thanks. I'm in a hurry. I gotta go," I rambled. I hugged my dad and grabbed a pancake on my way out the door.
"Hey Healer," I jumped at the sound of Daniel's voice. I had completely forgotten he was going to walk with me.
"I'm not a Healer yet, Daniel. This is my first day. Who knows what could happen," my tone was harsher than I meant. Daniel just nodded. We started our walk. I don't know how to explain it, but sometimes when I was with Daniel I just felt annoyed. He wouldn't even say or do anything. I was oddly glad when we reached the turn off for the Law Holder building.
"Well, this is my stop. Look, Chantelle I've really been wanting to talk to you lately. It's kind of important. Can we get dinner tonight?" He asked. I searched his eyes. I couldn't tell how he was feeling. I slowly nodded. He told me goodbye and left.
When I arrived at my school I looked it up and down. The Healer building was huge. So much of it was made of glass. I stood on the cement steps leading up to the door and took it all in. I pushed open the doors and entered the next step of my life. I was surprised to see how many students were there. I forget that the selection of jobs I went to was only for my school. There were many more schools in Chartom. There were many boys and girls. All different sizes, shapes, and ethnicity. I smiled at the sight of my future coworkers.
"Welcome to the Healer Institution of Chartom. I'm Melany. I'll be one of your many mentors. You're all here because you were chosen for this job. If you think this will be a cake walk then the door is behind you. I know many of you think that this job just hands out pills and medicines to patients. I can assure you, this job is so much more. Your whole lives you have been shielded from the world outside. Our world is without a doubt perfect. However, the world outside is full of darkness. You will see some of that darkness in this job. Some of you will fall prey to the darkness. Other's of you will be a light in it. Which will you be?" She looked at us all. I swear when she asked her last question she stopped scanning the room and looked directly at me.
"That being said, I think it's time you all hit the books. The Healer in the corner will give you all maps. Go to the booth to get your schedule. From here on out you are adults. We expect you to act like it. There will be guides all over. Find one. Work hard. Your future is in your own hands," Melany said. I got chills. I should've worn a jacket.

My first day was hard. I had homework in almost every class. Melany met us all at the front of the building during dismissal time. She let everyone go except me. She said it was because she'd heard I was one of the most promising students. She held me back to give me extra work. That's right extra work. As if my school bag wasn't already weighing a ton.
By the time I left it was dark. It felt weird. I always walked home with my friend from school. I didn't have any here. I knew a few people that I used to go to school with, but I didn't have class with the ones I was sort of friends with. I got the chills again. I was really going to have to start bringing a jacket. I knew that sooner rather than later the fall air would turn to cold winter. All I wanted to do was get home and drink some cider.
By the time I realized I was lost my goosebumps were all over my body. I looked at my phone. 6:30. I pulled up my GPS and typed in my address. I walked down the street and started to turn right just like my GPS said. I froze. It was leading me straight down a very dark alley. I slowly turned the corner. My goosebumps were still there, except I wasn't cold anymore. I was just starting to feel safe. That's when the hand grabbed my arm. That's when I screamed.
