Shikamaru's POV

"What a drag...." I mumbled as I saw the pill of papers on my desk , that damn Naruto always makes me do all the hard work.
"Hey Shikamaru."
"Hm?" I hummed before looking at Ino who just entered my office with a hint of nervousness in her eyes.
I arched my eyebrow, It's so unlike her to be nervous except when she's talking to her new found crush Sai.
"W...why didn't you pick up your phone?" She asked.
Now this is suspicious.
I sighed remembering what happened to my phone and the trouble and tiredness I have to go through to buy a new one.
"Choji poured saki on it on lunch break. Why? Did you call me?" I asked looking at my laptop screen.
"Not...not me....It's about (y/n)" her voice trembled I look up at her in worry.
"What's wrong with her? Is she ok?"

I ran out of the building at full speed after hearing Ino's next words I ran to my car and drive at full speed toward my destination.
'Why didn't I see it coming? I know she wasn't ok, I knew she was suffering from depression I fucking knew it all yet I did NOTHING... I shouldn't have left her alone, I shouldn't have believed when she said she was fine....What if it's already too late???? Please be ok babe...please (y/n).' I thought without noticing tears that streamed down my face.

*Flashback to this morning*

3rd person POV

Shikamaru smiled as the (h/c) haired girl helped him fixing his tie smiling at him after she was finished.
Something about her smile wasn't right he noticed. Even after losing her parents in accident a few months ago she wasn't herself anymore, she ate less, smiled less, and she couldn't sleep. The worst part was she didn't even cried, not even once, not shedding a single tear that's what worried them the most, that she was calm, too calm for her own good but everytime Shikamaru or one of her friends would mention it she would fake a smile saying she was fine and just needed time. She even quit her job and locked herself in their shared apartment.
"You look pale, Do you want me to stay with you today?" Shikamaru asked in a hushed tone caressing her cheek with his hand softly.
She smiled, another fake smile before replying
"I'm fine honey don't worry" What bothered him wasn't her fake smile, It was the pain and sorrow in her beautiful (e/c) orbs that broke his heart. She used to talk about her day and feelings with him,If anything she was like Naruto, she would talk nonstop.
"(Y/n)...." he called her name desperately, hopping she would cry, or say she's not ok because he knew she wasn't.
"Babe I know it's so hard for you, I know how much you loved them but..." but before he could say any farther she silenced him by kissing his lips softly.
He kissed back, but it soon turned out to a desperate and hungry kiss.
(Y/n) pulled away first looking into his eyes lovingly circling her arms around his neck bringing him closer.
"I'm fine Shika, Seriously " She used his nickname his eyes softened.
"I know I was a little bit out but I'm fine now I promise, I want to let it all go now...I...I'm gonna be fine" she said before taking a shakey breath hugging him tightly.

*End of flashback*

3rd person's POV

"So this is what you meant?" He laughed bitterly biting his lower lip to hold back sobs.
After what seems like an eternity he arrived at hospital. Asking the nurses he made his way toward the operation room.
He saw Sakura in the hallway with bloodshed eyes rocking herself on a chair a gloomy Sasuke comforting her, she stood up upon seeing him.
"Shi...Shikamaru..." she wailed hugging Sasuke after that.
His heart sink in his stomach. Taking shakey steps toward the couple.
"Where is she?" He asked.
"They are operating on her. Tsunade is in the charge of surgery so don't worry she's gonna be fine" Sasuke answered.
"It's all my fault....I should have been more careful I should've been by her side..." Shikamaru said sitting on the floor his back hitting the wall.
"It's not your fault it's everyone's. We didn't see it coming, we just sat there looking the light leaving her eyes..." Sasuke said.
"Who...would've thought....our happy (y/n) jumping of a building...." Sakura sobbed. The fear of losing her best friend suffocating her.
As they were talking Naruto and Hinata along everyone else joined them all waiting for the surgery to be over wishing to see their beloved (y/n) happy and alive again.

(Time skip)

Shikamaru sat silently on the chair next to the hospital bed looking at his lover's peaceful yet lifeless face as she was still unconscious. He was beyond happy when Tsunade came out of the room saying she was ok and the surgery was successful. The fall did manage to break her right leg and hip bone along with one of her arms but her brain was ok.
Tsunade assured everyone that she would be ok in no time.
He hold her cold hands in his larger ones, squeezing them softly scared to let go, afraid that if he let go of her hand or closes his eyes she's going to fly away like a butterfly.
"You reckless fool...What were you thinking? Jumping off of the roof? Did you ever think about our friends? About me? What if you didn't make it? What...what if.... I would've die without you... why did you do that?" He started crying only stopping when a soft voice called his name.
"Gomene...Shika..."
He looked at (y/n) in shock and happiness not believing his eyes.
She was looking at him with her beautiful eyes filled with tears.
He bent down hugging her softly careful about not hurting her. She was so light so fragile in his arms.
He let out a breathy laugh kissing her cheek.
"Thank Goodness I was so afraid. I love you (y/n), I love you so much. Don't scare me like that ever again." he wishperd.
" I'm so sorry... I love you too." She sobbed into his arms.
When he let go he looked into her eyes,
"Promise me, promise you'll never leave me" he begged.
"I promise" she said still crying.
"Don't cry love...I'm here, we will go through this together. Your not alone alright?"
She nodded her head smiling softly, not a fake one but a beautiful, genuine smile that light up Shikamaru's world.
'From now on, I'm gonna protect you my beautiful butterfly I promise' he thought before leaning over and kissing her lips.
