Bronwyn's POV

It was late. The moon was at its highest point, shining a bright white light that illuminated the waves every time they crashed onto the shore. The salty air blew my hair in several directions as I walked closer to the water, anxiously awaiting my skin making contact with the ocean. I clutched my surfboard tighter, a slight shiver running down my spine as the wind picked up. I knew I wasn't supposed to be out there, but something about that night urged me to go.

I set my surfboard on the sand for a mini and took a seat next to it. My cheeks were stained with tears that have long since dried from stepping outside. Even though it was mid June, this was one of the colder nights of the summer, making it one of my favorite surfing conditions.

Ever since I was little I would come out here on the beach and just sit, watching the stars for hours at a time. It's such a surreal feeling thinking that you are the only one on earth as all your problems seem to melt away.

But that didn't happen tonight.

The entire town has been on edge since the news broke, na so had to get out of my own head for awhile. I lift my arms up and take off the sweatshirt I had covering my swimsuit then grabbing my surfboard and running straight for the water.

And I let my whole world stop.

~~2 weeks earlier~~

"Roni c'mon we don't have all day! We wanna get there before sundown!" My mother's voice rang through the staircase up to my room. I'm still sitting on my bedroom floor, looking around at the emptiness that used to hold everything I own.

"I'm coming." I reply. I take a deep breathe and push myself up off the ground, picking up the last box that was in the center of the room. The contents in the box were limited I could easily carry it with one hand. Reaching the door I take on last look into the room before closing it gently behind me.

"Is that it?" My dad asks, grabbing the box out of my hand

"That's it." I answer reaching into my back pro key to grab my phone. There's a few Snapchat  notifications on my home screen, and one message from my friend, Laila.

"Hey boo, don't forget me when your gone💛 ily so much Roni! FaceTime me when you get there!"

I feel the urge to let a tear fall down my cheek but I fight it as I quickly text back a short reply and hit send. I scroll through Instagram as I wait for my mom to finish loading up the rest of the silverware into a small box and place it into the moving van.

"Bronwyn will you go check on your brother and let him know we are leaving in five minutes?" She asks closing the box and securing it with some clear packing tape. I nod my head and turn on my heels to my brother's room.

The door was cracked slightly but I gently knock before pushing myself in. "Hey Dec, mom wanted me to tell you that we're leaving in five minutes. Are you ready?"

He's sitting on the beach installed into the bay window in his room. He looks up at me, a large grin plastered on his face. "Thank goodness! I've been ready to get out of here since we first opened the door to this shithole." He stands up and wraps an arm around my shoulders and we walk into the living room. "How are you feeling?"

I can feel him looking at me but I'm afraid if I look back, he'll see right through me. "Can't do anything about it now can we?" I try to chuckle but it comes out completely forced.

Declan looks down at me, since he is a few inches taller, and I can tell he knows how I'm feeling, but he doesn't press. Removing his arm from my shoulder he helps my dad load up the last of the boxes and gets into his car.

My parents hired some service to drive my car and our family car, that way Declan and I can ride in the same one while my parents drive the moving van. We all load up into the vehicles and my parents pull away first with Declan and I traveling behind.

"Are you ready to be in Outer Banks again?" Declan looks over at me and i smile at him before turning my head to look out the window.

"Yeah. Let's go home."
