Bronwyn's POV
Before I moved away, Outer Banks was the only home I had ever known. Coming back was unlocking memories I forgot I had. Like walking around this small town with my friends, not having a care in the world. Seeing OBX during the day for the first time in a long time was like a breath of fresh air. I was back home.
I let JJ drive my car that was parked in the driveway, which I soon realized was a mistake but was it was too late to do anything about it.
We didn't talk for a while. And it was really nice. The windows were down, music playing softly on the radio, and I smiled slightly to myself as I stared out the window. I put my arm out and moved it in the wave motion with the air that everyone used to do as a kid.
About twenty minutes pass of JJ and I just driving up and down random roads, enjoying each other's company and just the nostalgic moment.
Pretty soon JJ pulls into a parking lot next to a familiar restaurant and he shits the engine off. Neither of us move for a second and he leans back into his seat. My heart rate starts to pick up and I look at JJ with a smile on my face. He turns to look at me and returns the grin.
"Go get 'er tiger." He says hitting the unlock button for the door. I throw it open and run up to the front door. I stand there for a second before walking in. She's standing there, not hearing me walk in, talking to someone sitting in a booth and handing them their bill. She finishes with them, places a pen in her apron and dusts off her hands turning away from them in my direction. She looks up and stops dead in her tracks.
"Roni?"
"Ki!"
We both run to one another, wrapping our arms around in the tightest hug we've ever shared.
"I-I didn't know you were back!" I hear her get choked up as she steps away with a huge smile on her face.
"We just got in last night, I wanted to surprise you!" We smile and pull each other into another hug. "I missed my best friend so much."
"Same here boo. You have years to make up for leaving me by myself with some major dweebs." She says wiping a tear that was starting to fall from her left eye.
"I'm so sorry." I joke and she walks to the front counter and calls her dad over. I follow her as he appears and greets me with a warm smile.
"Bronwyn! So good to see you again! Are you guys finally back to stay?" He asks wiping his hands on a towel that he was holding.
"We are, just got in last night as a matter of fact."
"Speaking of that, can I get the rest of my shift off?" She pleads. He looks between Ki and I before allowing a smile to form on his face.
"Absolutely! But just this one time." He answers while Ki rips off her apron and hands it to him to hang up in the back.
"You're the best! See you later." She calls to him as she links her arm in mine and we walk out of the restaurant, but as soon as we get outside Ki stops moving her feet and freezes. "Did JJ know you were back before I did?" She asks turning towards me, completely serious.
"Ki, you are the first one I wanted to see. But we kinda ran into each other last night and-"
"He knew last night and I just found out?!"
"I'm so sorry!" I reply pulling her into a hug. "I should've told you the minute we pulled into OBX."
"Yes that would've been really nice." She reluctantly returning the hug.
"Well now I know for next time." I say pulling away to look at her and try to read how she is really feeling.
"Oh there better not be a next time! Cmon, let's roll." She glares at JJ in the drivers seat as she open the door to the back and I get into the passengers. He pulls down his sunglasses to look at an angry Ki in the back of the car.
"Well hello there sunshine." He smirks and she flips him off.
"Oh shut the hell up. You're on my list Maybank." She points into the rear view mirror and I chuckle slightly as I put on my seatbelt.
"What did I do?" He asks with a hint of confusion sprawled on his face.
"You know damn well what you did. Watch your back."
"Alright I would start driving if I were you JJ." I say pull my hair out of my face. He shifts the car into reverse and pulls out onto the road. My hand returns to the opened window and repeats the same wave motion.
"So who else's have you seen since you've been back?" Ki aks sarcastically and I turn around to give her a look. "What? It's a valid question." She says.
"Just you two, that's it." I reply and Ki nods her head.
"We're meeting Pope at the docks in about five minutes." JJ speaks up taking a left next to an antique furniture store.
"Oh we are?" I ask looking over and him and JJ nods with a grin.
"Yup. I texted him when you girls were having your reunion. So I hope you're wearing your swimsuit, cause we're going for a dip."
"I am but I think seeing Pope is a little more important." I reply tapping my foot to the song playing on the radio station.
"I guess." He says pulling up to the docks. "Let's go."
