"Alexxa? Where are you?!"
The euphoria of the night instantly went out the fuckin door. I felt my face get boiling hot as Ag studied the sheer horror that flashed over my face. What am I gonna do? I've never disappointed Mom like this before. I needed to think quick.
"Oh! Hi mom.. I- I just.. um.. Oh! I stopped at Claire's house for a little to borrow a book for school.. We just lost track of time.. andd my car! It's almost out of gas.." I managed to stutter out through my nervousness. Hopefully it sounded convincing enough.
Ag seemed scared but she also found my fear hilarious, she stifled her laughs at my terrible lies.
"Okay honey.. Do you need me to pick you up?"
Nonono.
"Um No Mom! I'll just sleepover if that's fine!""No honey. Remember we have an early morning tomorrow, it's a school day. You know how I feel about sleepovers on school days. And you have my groceries in your car! I'm coming to pick you up, you'll just have to get your car later. I'll be there in 20!"
Fuck.
"Oh.. okay Mom i'll see you in a little bit." I frantically hung up the phone. I quickly stood up and pulled Ag up. We ran to her car.
"We have to go! I just told my mom that I was at a friends house and that my car doesn't have gas. I need to get back to the grocery store, get my car and drive to Claire's house within 20 minutes" I said in between breaths as I rushed into the passenger seat of Ag's car.
"But why didn't you just tell her you're with me?" Ag buckled her seatbelt. Obviously she didn't pick up on the hints I was dropping.
"Becausee Ag, I'm not technically out yet, I don't want my mom to find out this way. And she wouldn't be too happy if she knew that I was hanging around with someone I met a couple hours ago." She nodded, noticing the urgency of my dilemma and picked up the pace, racing to the now closed grocery store.
We found my car in the almost nearly empty lot and I raced over to it patting myself down in search for my keys.
"Keys! Ag, where are my keys?!"
We both look around, on the ground, near my car, in her car. I spotted them.. in between the two seats. I reached down with my hand being squeezed in pain, so desperately needing nothing bad to happen. But here I was. Centimeters away my hand practically goes numb, but I had no time for theatrics. I thrusted my hand through the seats and reached the keys. I ran to my car to leave, but not without giving Ag a proper goodbye.
"Okay, I'd love to give you a nice goodbye hug and a kiss and- Oh my! I- Never mind.." What. Why would that even come out of my mouth. Ag blushed. There was a second of awkward silence.
"Ok! Bye!" We both say.
I get in my car and drive over to Claire's house. I called her on the phone to loop her in on what was currently happening."Yo! Claire! Okay I know this is going to sound crazy but I'm coming over right now because I told my mom that I was with you and my car ran out of gas so that she wouldn't know that I was hanging out with..someone else" I couldn't out myself to Claire so I kind of danced around the details. "And now she's on her way over. She called me 15 minutes ago and told me that she'd be there in 20. I'm almost there. Can you pleasee make it look like i've been there for hours?!" I rambled.
"Yes yes of course, I got it" Claire always had my back the most out of all the girls.
"Thank you!"
I drove as fast and as responsible as I could over to Claire's house trying to beat Mom in the race over there. I reached her house and got in with around 2 minutes to spare. With those two minutes I sped over to the couch and made it look like I'd been there for hours, messing up my hair, taking off my shoes, turning on the tv and Clair placing a bowl of chips in front of us.
I took a second to take a deep breath. Only to be filled with fear at the sound of Mom's gentle knock at Claire's front door.
Claire got up and opened the door.
"Hi Mrs. Evans!"
"Hi Claire. I'm here to pick up Alexxa" Mom said sternly. Which was weird because she never referred to me by first name. Was she mad? Did my plan not work?
I smiled faintly and stood up to meet Mom at the door.
"Bye Claire! Thanks for the books!""Books? What boo- oh! The books. Yeah no problem.." You fucking idiot Claire.
Mom and I walked to her car in silence. Mom opened the drivers seat door and sat. She paused and thought for a moment. She looked at me and started.
"Alexxa. I know you lied."
Oh no.
"Lied? About what?" I thought if I played dumb I could maybe get away with this.
"Don't play stupid Alexxa. I know that you weren't with Claire the whole time. I'm your mother, I can tell when you're lying. So the question is, where were you."
Ok. Just come clean, there's no point in burying myself in lies anymore.
"I was with Weston."
Shit Lex, why did you lie?!
"I saw him at the grocery store. We just went to get something to eat after and I lost track of time. I didn't want to tell you because I thought you would think I was doing something bad. Really mom. That's what happened" It definitely wasn't what happened but I needed her to believe me. I wasn't ready to come out yet. In this moment, my mind lingered around the time I had spent with Ag, how I wanted to go back and be around her."Oh Lex.. you didn't have to lie. I wouldn't have been upset. But now I am. Alexxa you can't lie to me about these things. I just want to keep you safe" Mom explained calmly. I loved my mother, other moms would have yelled and screamed, but Mom understands how to maturely handle situations.
"Yes Mom, I understand."
