Yuri's POV

"Yakov, why do you have to do this to me? I won the Grand Prix and now you are putting this all to waste?"

"Yuri, I told you. This is all to build your strengths as a skater. If you want to become the greatest young skater in Russia you must cover all fields."

"Why can't I just continue to show off my skills on my own? I don't need a girl to help me with that."

"Please, Yuri. You're eighteen, for crying out loud. You need to mature as a person and skater and this will help you with that. Who knows, you might even find it enlightening. And besides, it's not like you will compete together."

"Ugh, fine."

That's me, Yuri Plisetsky. It has been three years since I won the Grand Prix in my senior figure skating debut, and on my sixteenth birthday I moved to Moscow to live with my grandfather and continue to pursue skating as a career.

Since then I have been practising at a rink in a secret location eight hours every day to have some sort of safety from the hordes of fans that have formed since the Grand Prix. There I have spent my time improving every jump, spin and step to perfection, under the tuition of the finest skating and ballet instructors Russia has to offer. Except now it seems that I have met my match.

About two weeks ago Yakov, my skating instructor, got a call from St. Petersburg - it was his ex-student and figure skater extraordinaire Viktor Nikiforov, who resides there with his partner and my arch rival Yuuri Katsuki. They opened up a skating school which attracts students from around the world - including one from Siberia, who will travel over to Moscow to be a new member of Team Russia. And of course, he proposed the idea of teaching me Pairs.

The thought of skating with a girl makes me shudder with a mixture of fear and disgust - I have been known to dominate the rink as a solo skater, winning competitions left, right and centre.

Which brings me to now. I see my ballet instructor, Lilia, step up next to Yakov, phone in hand.

She smiles. "I got a text from Viktor. The train is tomorrow, ready to start practise on Monday. Yurochka, are you ready to begin studying the art of pairs skating?"

I scowl. Yakov and Lilia laugh, much to my own dismay.

"It's a beautiful thing. No more leaping about like a little boy, for you will learn how to lift your partner, throw her into the air, show off a stronger side of yourself to your fans and the audience. Now that you're older, it's time you man up for once," Yakov chuckles, trying to gain my attention.

"And we think that Viktor has picked the best possible partner for you," Lilia adds,

showing me a video filmed on Viktor's phone of the girl skating a program to the same Lilac Fairy music that Viktor skated to at the Junior Grand Prix all those years ago.

Her hair is as bright as fire, her arm movements flowing smoothly as she lands the jump combinations with ease - I can't help but be stunned as she perfectly lands the triple toe loop, transitioning straight into a double flip.

The camera pans to show Katsuki watching attentively with his hands folded and his brow furrowed as the girl does a flawless flying sit spin, and during her step sequence she swiftly passes her two instructors with a cheeky smile on her face. I continue to be entranced as she carries on, performing a triple Lutz, double loop jump sequence.

My jaw drops as she effortlessly makes the triple Salchow - this should be illegal for someone of her age, especially at the end of a programme. She does not tire during the final Biellmann spin and enters the finishing pose with grace and poise, before receiving generous applause from both instructors. I hear her giggle as she returns to the edge of the rink and I get a proper look at her face - she's beautiful.

"Yes, Natasha's a very good asset to our team. A hardworking girl, she is," Lilia says, removing the phone from my hands. The name resonates in my head. Yakov laughs again.

"Looks like our Yuri has a little crush," he teases. I return to my normal static state of emotion.

"No, absolutely not. She..." I try to find faults. "She... I saw a waver in her landing after the triple Salchow and she almost fell during the spiral," I lie, trying to deny the fact that I just saw perfection before my eyes.

Lilia smiles. "It's okay. You don't have to hide your emotions just because you are a sportsman."

I sigh. "I guess. But that doesn't mean I forgive you two for making me do this."
