it was abby's first day of her new job at the strategic scientific reserve. she walked out onto a dirt field and looked at her small unit. she was hired to train them to become a better army as a whole and better soldiers individually. as she walked towards them, she looked at them all standing at attention waiting for her to arrive. she spotted james barnes and she gazed over the new recruits.

"ready, exercise!" an officer shouted at the men when he saw abby arrive. as they scrambled into place, abby started addressing them.

"recruits, attention! gentlemen, i'm agent thatcher. i supervise all operations for this division." she yelled to them as she walked next to them, getting a good look.

"what's with the accent, scarlett o'hara? thought i was signing up for the u.s. army," one man cockily said upon noticing her southern accent, while some of his friends in the back laughed. abby suddenly stopped pacing in front of him, turned to face him and glared at him.

"what's your name, soldier?" abby asked as the other men seemed to be intimidated by the authority in her tone.

"joseph bradford, your majesty" he said with an attitude, raising an eyebrow.

"step forward please," abby said with a slight politeness in her tone, trying to keep her cool since this was her first day and she didn't want to make a reputation for herself. joseph looked around at his friends and grinned, putting his hands on his hips and not moving from the line.

"i wasn't asking," abby said as she raised her eyebrows and her voice.

bradford chuckled, "oh she's feisty, i like that," he said as abby swore she saw james get mad out of the corner of her eye.

"put your right foot forward," abby commanded as he did as he was told.

"mmm... we gonna wrestle? 'cause i got a few moves i know you'll like," bradford said through a smirked as he leaned closer. abby cracked a slight smile and quickly punched him in the face, the impact sending him flying towards the ground. she saw james look at her happily and proud and she stiffed a laugh. abby straightened up her clothes when she heard a car engine arrive

"agent thatcher," the colonel said as he got out of the jeep he came in. abby saluted to the older man and stood aside so he could look at their new recruits. "colonel jennings."

"i see you're breaking in the candidates. that's good!" colonel jennings looked at bradford and scoffed, "get your ass up out of that dirt and stand in that line at attention 'til somebody comes and tells you what to do."

it may not have shown on her face but abby was happy that bradford didn't have the best first impression on colonel jennings. she disliked the man as soon as he opened his mouth as was glad the colonel shared the feelings.

"general patton has said that wars are fought with weapons but they are won by men. we are going to win this war because we have the best men. and because they're gonna get better. the strategic scientific reserve is an allied effort made up of the best minds in the free world. our goal is to create the best army in history. but every army starts with one man. your goal is to prove to us that your that man," colonel jennings looked at all of them. "what  are you doing standing there? get to training!

"you," the colonel pointed to an officer, "take them running."

"yes sir," the officer saluted then started jogging and the men followed in suit.

the colonel started walking towards the car, "come on abby, get in." he said as he patted the seat behind the driver. abby jumped in as the car started and after about five minutes they passed the men running and stopped when they reached a rusted flagpole.

"pick up the pace, ladies! let's go! double time! come on! faster! faster! move! move!" abby could hear the shouting as she saw the first group of men arrive at the flagpole. the officer began yelling again. "squad, halt! that flag means we're only at the halfway point. first man to bring it to me gets a ride back with agent thatcher. move, move!"

they all started attempting to climb the pole while they all shouted at one another. a few of the men made it halfway before they started sliding down.

"if that's all you got, this army's in trouble! get up there, bradford! come on! get up there! nobody's got that flag in seventeen years! now fall back into line! come on, fall in! let's go! get back into formation! barnes! i said fall in!" the officer yelled as james was still climbing up the pole. he suddenly jumped down with the flag in his hand and a proud look on his face.

he gave it to the officer, "thank you sir," he said breathlessly as he jumped into the car. abby looked at the colonel with a look as if to say i told you so. colonel jennings rolled his eyes and she smirked as she looked at james. she knew the colonel didn't like barnes because he had a little rivalry with bradford and bradford was the colonel's favorite. they drove away as the soldiers started running again.

when they got back james got out of the car and waited for the other men to get back. when they arrived ,they all got into formation and started doing push ups, courtesy of the colonel. he asked if abby could take over while he went to talk to doctor erskine about the super soldier serum.

"faster ladies. my grandmother has more life in her. god rest her soul. move it!" abby complained yelling at the soldiers. "up!" she commanded. ugh, they're so slow! she thought to herself as she watched the men struggle against the blistering heat.

"come on girls, get up!" she said as the officer walked over, "i'll take over, you're relieved for the day," the officer told abby. she nodded and walked towards her army green jeep. the colonel stopped her and told her what a great job she did that day and she thanked him, continuing on her way home.
