"it's just so refreshing to talk to someone about what's going on in the war and not have them look at you like you're stupid or crazy." abby explained as the two girls started laughing. when abby was relieved of her war duties, her car wouldn't start. so one of her closest friends, peggy carter offered to give her a ride home in jeep."i know exactly what you mean. remember when we were in collage and the professors were so confused as to why we wanted to get into war?" peggy asked, smiling at the memories they had made in college. the two had become very close in their young adult years and were rekindling their friendship through this war.
"yes he said 'are you sure beautiful young ladies, such as yourselves, want to get into a dangerous thing like war?' every day he asked us if we were sure we should go along this path," abby complained, remembering the teacher who pushed them to engage in nurses, chefs, dress makers, or just quit college altogether. obviously those professors were wrong, since both women had been recruited by the strategic scientific reserve. a highly elite and pretentious group.
"and every day you would respond with 'just because you're not brave enough doesn't mean i'm not'." peggy said as she smiled at the attitude her friend had in college. peggy soon cane to realize that abby didn't lose that attitude when she graduated and admired her deeply for it.
abby shrugged defensively while peggy was still amused. "how did your first day go?" peggy asked curiously, after they recovered from their fits of laughter.
"oh you know, one guy thinks he's above everyone else, i get to yell at them all for being weak, and i punched someone. typical day in the neighborhood." abby said looking back on her day, " what about you?" abby said as she turned to peggy.
"i'd say the highlight of my day was punching a soldier named hodge, he was just so..." peggy couldn't think of the right word to use while abby groaned, "i know the type. anything else stand out?" abby questioned.
"there was something intresting," peggy said, "oh! do tell" abby said, suddenly intrigued as to why her friend had started smiling.
"well, there was this boy..." peggy looked at abby and rolled her eyes, "not in that way, abby!" she said realizing what abby was thinking as the blonde laughed, "but who?"
peggy sighed at her friends immaturity and continued, avoiding eye contact with abby, "well, he was very small, his helmet covered almost all of his face. he was rather skinny, and very short, i've never seen anyone in brooklyn like this man."
abby's eyes widened as she realized who her friend was talking about. she looked over to peggy with wide eyes. "oh my goodness, was his name steve rogers?" peggy kept her eyes on the road but was confused as to how abby knew him.
"yes" peggy said. then she had to ask. "are you one of his friends?"
"one of his closest actually," abby said proudly, happy that steve got into one of the most advanced units of the army. she smiled as she looked out the window, proud of her best friend.
"oh" peggy said, looking slightly disappointed.
"what?" abby asked slyly, taking note of her friends change in mood. abby started nudging her and asking her long train of questions.
"you're being so unprofessional," peggy mumbled under her breath.
"i'm not the one who likes someone in their quadrant!" abby said accused happily as she started bouncing around in the car. peggy laughed at her friend's attitude.
"says you," peggy said dramatically. abby looked over in confusion and peggy smiled. "i've seen the way you look at james!"
"how do you know about james?" abby gasped, getting slightly nervous about where the conversation was heading "all the times you told me about him," peggy said, as if it was obvious. abby turned a dark shade of pink and peggy looked at her triumphantly while smirking.
"you like steve!" abby yelled in retaliation and peggy hit the brakes abruptly. abby flew forward and covered her face while peggy smiled to herself.
"get out," peggy said playfully while abby grabbed her bag and walked out. abby waved to her friend and winked, to which peggy grinned and sped away.
abby walked up to the front door and walked into her house and found a file on her bed. she decided to let it sit there for now and read it later. she went to put her bag down in the kitchen. she took a shower and washed her hair, when she got out she looked at the time. 6:30, it's probably time for dinner she thought. she cooked some lasagna and was about to eat when she heard the door open and she saw betty walk in in a yellow flowing dress with heels in one hand and a small yellow handbag in the other.
"where were you?" abby said as she looked at betty curiously.
"i was out at party, nothing that i haven't already done before," she said, boredom in her tone as she tossed her heels on the small chair that sat by the door.
abby laughed, "i made some lasagna for us," she said as she made her way to the couch so she could look over the file. betty spotted the yellow file sitting on the wooden table and made her way over to sit next to the folder and her friend.
"what's that?" betty asked, gesturing toward the file.
"i don't know. i found it on my bed but i don't remember anyone talking about it," abby shrugged, very curious as to what information the folder held. after they both sat down, betty looked opened it and her eyes widened.
"what!" abby eagerly said wondering what betty found out.
"the super soldier serum," betty said as she showed abby the file, "they're using it on steve!" the girl finished.
"what!!" abby yelled.
