I walked into school that day, only to step one foot in and be greeted by the leader of the group herself, Maddie Dean. Maddie’s whole entire family was rich. That’s why she could afford concert tickets and meet and greets for all of us. Her dad is some really high class doctor that is even a doctor for celebrities. He’s well known, but I wouldn’t know him if you had asked me. Apparently Maddie heard of this Hunter Hayes guy because one of the guys from Rascal Flatts had a doctor’s appointment and mentioned him. Then her dad told her about Hunter and, Whabam! We’re going to the concert.
Finally it got to be the last period of the day, honestly it’s my least favorite period… math. Not only do I hate the subject, I also hate the teacher. And the teacher hates me so I guess it’s all okay! We’re learning about some kind of algebra equations, when I drift off into a daydream.
I look into the mirror and try to dye my hair brown again, but it won’t dye. I try to wash my hair so it won’t be straight, but naturally curly, but that doesn’t work wither! I can’t take out my contacts, and my false nails won’t come off. The room turns into a room of just black with no exit. I scream for help and cry, but nobody can hear me! Then I hear somebody’s voice. “Shayna,” it calls! “Shayna, are you there?”
That’s when I’m brought back to reality. “Shayna… hello?” My teacher Mr. Britain is waving in my face. I snap out of it, my eyes getting wider and shaking my head. Everybody laughs at me. But what they don’t know is that I already know and understand math. That’s why I hate it so much. I pretend to be on level, when I am so much more advanced than anyone would imagine. I just have to play it down… I just have to.
When the dreaded math period ends, I return to my locker at the top of the north hallway, retrieve my books, and attempt to make it to the bus without being interrupted, notice I say try.
“Hey Shayna!” It’s Christina.
I slowly turn around to find the boy puppy dog. “Heeeeey.”
“So the girls and I were going to ditch school tomorrow to go out shopping for the concert, and then go and get our nails and hair done and do our make-up. You in?” Why is this girl always so peppy?
“Ummm Christina, I don’t know. I mean, ditching school…” Then she cut me off.
“Shayna, there’s nothing to worry about.”
“Sorry Chrissy, but I can’t.”
“That’s cool. We totally understand, so see ya before the concert tomorrow!”
With that I was able to leave the building peacefully and without another interruption. I finally was able to hop onto the bus and sink down into the seat with my earbuds to block out the world around me.
When I finally got home, I ran into the house and plopped on the couch. As my body sunk into the couch, I decided to finally find out who this Hunter Hayes guy was. I went on to YouTube and it turns out, he’s got his own channel where he posts videos.
I woke up to the sound of a voice I had now memorized. I looked at my computer screen to find it was three o’clock in the morning! Hunter’s YouTube videos (For the Love of Music aka FTLOM) had been on constant repeat for hours. He was such a charming and hilarious, not to mention cute and talented person. He was kind and entertaining, which made me look forward to today even more. Wait… TODAY! THE CONCERT IS TODAY!
I jumped off of the couch to look around my house and find that as usual, my mother wasn’t home. My mom and dad got a divorce when I was six, and now I’m eighteen, so that was quite a while ago. From what I know, my father was arrested about five years ago. I haven’t talked to him since age six, so he’s out of the picture.
My mom, on the other hand, is quite different. In my opinion, she should be arrested. The court gave her permission to be my legal guardian, except she may have forgotten that she’s actually supposed to stay true to that “guardian” part. She is never home, so I’m left to fend for myself every day. Most day, I’m not sure where she goes. Maybe out drinking, or to another state or something. I haven’t seen her in two weeks now, so I’m pretty much loosing hope of her ever coming back.
I fixed myself a waffle and eggs. I chomped down on those pretty quickly, grabbed my writing notebook and phone, and sprinted out of the house in order to make the bus today. This was after I had made a T-shirt and poster for the concert, and practiced what I would say when I met Hunter.
