Rivers and Eagles

A couple days had passed since the incident at the drive-in theater, though nobody in the base acted like it. Everybody just continued to go about their normal days, going out to battle or just hanging around and enjoying themselves. The only one that seemed a bit off was Spy, but he did his best to keep his usual calm demeanor.

That day, they had gone off to battle to fight some robots, before coming back to the base to rest and relax. As the sun got lower and lower in the sky, Soldier decided to head outside, as he believed that he had seen an eagle fly by earlier during battle. He wanted to find that magnificent American bastard so badly, he could hardly wait. Soldier had asked both Zhanna and Engineer if they would like to journey with them to find the eagle, but both had declined, for Zhanna was spending time with Heavy and Engie was busy with something else. With no one else accompanying him, he snatched Medic’s camera so he could take pictures of the eagle to show everyone else.

Quickly making his way outside, Soldier, with a camera in hand, headed the direction he believed he saw the eagle fly towards. He eventually found himself near the river of Tuefort, where several shops laid about. Soldier looked around everywhere, determined to find that damn bird. He crossed the small bridge above the water to get to the opposite side, where instead of buildings, there were a bunch of trees laying about. That was the perfect spot for birds to live in!

He poked around in each tree, checking every branch and listening real closely for the birds. As much as he wanted to yell at them to get their puny asses out of the trees, Soldier knew that would scare away the birds, which was the opposite of what he wanted. When he got to a tree farther away from the bridge, he began to hear small chirps. He practically jumped with joy, looking closer and closer at each tree, before finding a nest housing two baby eagles.

With a giant grin on his face, he began to take some pictures of the eaglets. He couldn’t wait to show Zhanna and Engineer! The photos were blurry as all hell, all of them barely depicting what they were taken of, but Soldier just kept taking more and more of them. The only thing that could have, and did stop him, from taking hundreds of photos was running out of space. He put the camera into one of his pockets, and before taking his leave, he decided to play with the little eaglets one last time.

He petted them both, looking at them as if they were his own children. No true American would be able to look at an eaglet and feel no joy; those people were obviously Canadians! As Soldier played with the little eaglets, he heard a large stick fall to the ground. Soldier looked up into the trees, wondering what caused it to fall, before shrugging and turning his attention back to the eaglets.

As the sun was nearly set, Soldier was ready to head back to the base, and he patted the eaglets farewell. Before he finished saying goodbye, he felt a slight breeze fly by, which was strange, as it hadn’t been windy at all that day. Then he heard a large screech echo in the air. Soldier looked around, then into the sky, where he saw an eagle flying straight towards where he was playing with the eaglets. He smiled as he watched it fly down, getting the camera out to take a picture, but it quickly faded as he noticed the eagle’s talons were pointed right towards him.

Before he could react, the eagle had already reached him, and began to scratch his face, its wings flapping furiously as it continued to screech. Soldier tried to fight back, but all he did was manage to knock his helmet off his face and anger the eagle more. Yelling out of fear and pain, he tried to fall to the ground to escape it, but the eagle was determined to hurt whoever tried to go near its babies. Soldier screamed as it scratched his eyes, causing them to bleed furiously, leaving him blinded.

With no other option, Soldier quit fighting, and tried to stay still, hoping that the eagle would leave him alone. Eventually, it did, and flew up to its nest to check on its babies to make sure they were safe. Having to rely on his hearing to know it was gone, Soldier sat there until he heard it fly off again, then tried to stand up. It was difficult, as he both couldn’t see and his face was burning with pain from all the deep scratches the eagle had caused.

Soldier called out for somebody, anybody, to come help him, but it was no use. All the buildings on the other side of the river were too far for anyone to be able to hear him. Not knowing what else to do, Soldier used his feet and arms to help try and guide himself around. He had to get back to the base and get Medic’s help as soon as he could. Slowly putting one foot in front of the other, Soldier did his best to make his way back to the bridge so he could ask someone in the buildings for their assistance.

Gaining confidence in his steps, Soldier began to walk more quickly, wanting to rid of the pain as soon as possible. With one misstep, however, he tripped over the recently fallen stick he had heard fall earlier. Flailing his arms around, Soldier fell into the river, crying for help. It quickly swept him away, the water seeming to get more and more powerful the longer he was in. The water kept pulling him under as he continued down stream, causing him to swallow tons of water as he struggled to keep his head above water.

He tried hard to swim to the either side of the river, but with no sense of sight, the task was nearly impossible for him. Soldier began to become tired as he tried to keep himself afloat, and was being pulled down more and more easily, water rushing into his lungs. With one last effort, he tried to scream, but nothing came out of his mouth, before he closed his eyes and continued to be swept away by the water, his body laying still on the now calm surface.
