Double Heartache

Loud sounds of metal being hit and drills being powered on filled the workshop as Engineer worked hard on his latest project. It had been two days since Soldier’s death, and everyone was trying to go back to their normal routines. They hadn’t been called to do their work, for Miss Pauling figured that they, especially Demo, would need a bit of time to shake things off. It had been difficult, but she managed to make it happen.

Engie had decided to work on his guns to try and distract himself from the low feeling hanging in the air. Though he and Soldier were never best friends, Engie still missed him. The team just didn’t feel complete anymore.

As he worked, Pyro waltzed on into the workshop, curious as to what Engineer was doing. It took Pyro a couple muffled noises to get his attention. When Engie noticed him, he placed his wrench down and smiled at Pyro.

“Now what can I do for ya, Pyro?”

Pyro walked over, talking to Engineer, who was somehow able to understand what Pyro was saying. He sat down on a stool next to Engie, staring at what he was making.

“I’m just makin’ a few upgrades to my sentry right now.” Engineer said, leaning back on the workbench. “Tryin’ to make it a bit stronger against bullets, and add a few new special upgrade.”

Standing up, Pyro took a good look at the bright red sentry. It was huge, just a little smaller than Engineer himself. He clapped with happiness, making elated muffled sounds.

“I’m glad ya like it, Pyro.” Engineer chuckled. “Hey, do you mind stayin’ here while I go grab some food? I’ll only be about 10 minutes.”

Pyro nodded as he sat back down on the stool.

“Great, thank you so much.” Engie nodded, before walking out of the workshop and heading upstairs to the kitchen.

As he sat on the stool, Pyro swung his legs back and forth as he pulled out his lighter, which he began to play with. Flicking it off and on again, he stared mindlessly at the fire. Eventually he put it away out of boredom, and hopped off the stool to look around the workshop. As he got up, the lighter fell out of his back pocket, landing on the ground. Pyro didn’t realize this, and also didn’t notice as the lighter turned on despite no one actually starting the flame.

Pyro walked over to the sentry, checking it out again, wondering why Engineer loved it so much. As he began to look around the workshop, Engineer came back in with a plate of vegetables and ranch. He placed it on the workbench, then sat down on the stool and began to eat. He looked down, and noticed the little flame on the floor coming from the lighter. Engie quickly picked the lighter up and stomped on the fire until it was gone. Sighing, he handed the lighter to Pyro.

“Make sure this stays in your pocket, and that you make sure to turn it off, too.”

Pyro took the lighter without a word, wondering how it had gotten on the floor.

“Anywho, do you wanna help me out, Pyro?” Engie asked in between bites of his carrot.

Pyro nodded, and Engineer sat up real quick to grab some items for Pyro. He placed a hammer, some wooden boards, and a box of nails down next to his sentry and smiled.

“Here, you can work beside me.”

Engie started to work on his Sentry, while Pyro picked up the hammer and began nailing things to the wooden board. While hammering away, Pyro accidentally knocked over the box of nails, a majority of them falling to the floor.. Neither he or Engineer noticed them, and continued to work.

Engineer began to hum a song, and Pyro joined along with him. Metal clanking and wood being hammered overtook the sounds of their humming, but it didn’t stop them. They happily worked away, distracted by their work.

While hammering away at the nails, Pyro mistakenly looked over to Engineer, which caused him to lose sight of the hammer and slam it down hard onto his other hand. He cried loudly when this happened, startling Engie, who snapped his head to look over at him. Pyro stepped back, waving his hand in great pain, not realizing the nails still laying on the floor. He slipped backward, his head hitting hard against the wall as he fell.

Engie looked towards Pyro just in time to watch the shelf above him, which held Pyro’s ax and other weaponry, break due to the impact of Pyro hitting the wall. His ax fell straight down, finding its way into his head right between his eyes. Pyro’s body went limp, and blood began to squirt out of his mask as he laid there, dead.

Full of shock, Engineer fell to his knees beside Pyro’s body, breathing heavily. He kept muttering “no” under his breath as he really took what had just happened. Not knowing what else to do,  he cried out Medic’s name, hoping he would come as quickly as possible. No one came, though, for nobody could hear him from the garage.

His heart heavy, Engineer picked up Pyro’s lifeless body, with the ax still deep in his skull, and headed upstairs.

Spy and Demoman were on the couches, Spy reading his book and Demoman just drinking away, heavy bags under both of their eyes, both for different reasons. They both turned to the stairs as they heard the floorboards creak, and their eyes widened as they watched Engineer walk in with Pyro in his arms.

“What the bloody hell?” Demoman gasped.

Spy quickly placed his book down and walked over to Engineer, who had placed Pyro down on the floor before him. Demoman followed behind Spy, looking down at his colleague. Both of them were at a loss for words.

“He… He fell…” Engineer tried to speak, but quickly fell silent. Seeing Pyro like this broke his heart.

Shaking his head, Spy called out for Medic, who’s lab was nearby. Medic walked into the room, followed by Heavy, a look of annoyance on his face due to them interrupting his work. That was until he saw Pyro. He quickly fell to Pyro’s side, trying to check for a pulse, but found nothing. Medic stood up, sighing, before turning towards Heavy.

“Take him to my lab, please.” He said. “Just put him next to Soldier. I’ll take care of zhem both tomorrow”

Heavy nodded, and with a solemn look, picked up Pyro, then headed back towards Medic’s lab. The other four just stood in a circle, none of them knowing what to say. All Spy could think about was Soldier, and how close together all of these events were happening. It was all beginning to seem less like a coincidence and more like something sinister was at play.

Demoman, not wanting to stand around any longer, went and sat back down on the couch, a new bottle of beer in his hand. Medic, Spy, and Engineer all looked towards him, then back at each other.

“I’m assuming you are thinking zhe same thing as me, Spy.” Medic finally said, wearing a hard expression.

“I am afraid so.” Spy shook his head.

While Medic and Spy talked, one of the lights in the room began to flicker. Spy turned around and looked up to see that it was the light above Demo. Before he could say anything, the light blew. This scared Demo, causing him to spill his alcohol all over himself. As he began to mutter angrily about it, sparks from the light flew down onto him. One of them landed onto the alcohol soaked spot, and set his shirt ablaze.

Everyone began to panic as they watched Demoman freak out about it. He was trying to put it out, but the fire had already spread down to his pockets, where one of his bombs was stored. Before any of them could help him, and without warning, the flame set the bomb off, and Medic, Spy, and Engineer watched as Demo, along with the couch he was sitting on, were blown to smithereens.

All of them had shocked expressions on their faces, bringing their arms down from in front of their faces after protecting themselves from the flying debris.

“We are right, Medic.” Spy sighed, looking at Medic and Engie. “We are right, and I have no doubt everyone is next.”
