Rob was surrounded by darkness. Everything was dark. Even when he held his hand in front of him, he couldn’t see anything, it was all a wash of black. When he blinked, it was just as bright as when he didn’t. There was nothing, around him, in front or behind. He was lost in nothing.
But yet, when he took a step forward, his foot fell on solid ground that was firm beneath his bare foot. It was cool to the touch beneath him, and felt like it was a long smooth surface, like on marble or glass.
He couldn’t see it, but only feel it, even when he lowered himself down to it, it was still only black. There was nothing to be seen, not even his foot. It was like he was blindfolded, but he could feel his eyes open and close, there wasn’t anything in front of him. He didn’t feel like there was anything over his head.
A child giggled around him, and he spun. He twirled endlessly trying to see, and feel where the sound came from. At first he had thought it had come from behind him, but when he turned it was all around him. It echoed off the nothing. It was everywhere but now where, the soft child sounds a tease of something there as it encased around him.
How had he gotten there, what was the last thing he could remember? Well,…
No, he couldn’t even remember, what did he remember? What is his name? Rob Alletto, he was a beat cop in Chicago. No, that is who he was, he wasn’t in Chicago anymore. No? Why not? Because he felt it was too dangerous for his…his who?
His son, Jake. Remember Jake, yes remember, he has a son and a wife. Wendy! No, his wife is Robyn, they were the Rob and Robyn and everyone like to make a joke about their names.
So who was Wendy?
The giggling intensified around him and now felt like it was a piercing needle trying to slowly push in on his temple. He could feel a tear at the corner of his eye, the wetness threatening to fall down his cheek. It was trying to get into his mind. It wanted to take him, like … like .. someone had fought for his mind before. He remembered he had to fight with someone else, someone who had wanted to take control of him. Was this giggled trying to control him? No, it wanted something else, but he could quiet place what it wanted.
How had he fought it before. He had fought something before, how had he beat it.
He thought of Jake and Robyn and remembered that moment. It was that most amazing moment. It was the first time he had held Jake in his arms. Robyn was a new mother, he was a new father, and she had handed him this small bundle, his eyes not even open yet, just a mouth opening and closing as it received its first taste of the world. Here was this little bundle of joy and she handed it to him.
He felt the giggling fade a little, the pressure against him backed away. His eyes fluttered open, he hadn’t even realized he had closed them. The world around him was still black, but now in front of him he saw a boy standing there. The boy was wear a dirty and torn white shirt and shorts that were barely held together. His skin was pale, but he could still remember the boy from the picture. It was the boy he was looking for. What was his name… Name, name, come one, what is his name?
“Hey” he called out to him. The boy was looking at him, he looked surprised and scared. Rob took a step torwards him, not seeing the step, but in his mind he made the motion and felt his feet lift to again fall on the floor.
The boy took a step back, and then another. Rob continued to move forward, but he couldn’t get any closer. The boy always stayed just out of reach.
When the boy realized this, a wide smile stretched that pale face and the boy started to laugh again. This time the laugh was deep and menacing, and somehow had the force to echo all around him. The sound cascading off the walls, growing in volume. Other cheers and more laughter joined the hideous laugh. It grew louder and louder. Rob thought he was going to black out as even in the darkness of the place, colors danced in his vision. He felt himself falling from the pain that was pushing in at him again. He was loosing it, he was going to give in. He was almost lost to it. He…-
