˚New Girl˚
˚˚˚
Moving to a new town was always pretty hard, but moving to a random island you've never even heard of all the way across the country seemed outrageous, especially to the small shy girl who ended up there. She didn't know anybody except for her father. She moved there because apparently her father was raised there and when her mom left them he wanted to go back and reconnect with his roots or some shit.
Her father never even mentioned this place, so moving here was a total surprise to her.
When she arrived off the ferry she looked around in wonder and slight disappointment. She was expecting a lush island with a beautiful coast and people surfing and swimming, but all she was met with was a grey sky and lots of large angry-looking people milling around the dock.
She went over to her father who was talking to someone she assumed worked on the ferry.
"Dad, this is weird," she whispered to her father who just smiled at her and told her to go explore the island a bit and meet him at home before dark.
She just rolled her eyes and walked in a random direction following some random guy carrying what looked like a small dog and smelled like rat shit. She had no idea where she was going.
Once the guy entered a building she started walking on a road that looked like it lead to something important.
Once she was sure she was lost she pulled out her phone and texted her father asking for the address of their new home. Once she received a response from her father she headed off in a direction she thought would bring her to her house, but instead, she went in a giant circle.
The shy girl looked around trying to find her way around the new, and unfamiliar town.
"Lost?" a deep voice appeared behind her causing her to jump in surprise. She turned in the direction of the voice to see a tall handsome blonde boy standing there looking at the building in front of them.
"Uhh... yeah," she answered meekly.
"Well that's the police station," he said pointing over her shoulder to the building right in front of them, "that's the library," he pointed to the building to the right of them, "and that right there is the park slash commons area slash that's where you go when you want to buy drugs." he pointed to the large open area with children running around that was just to the left of them. She chuckled slightly and turned to the boy.
"My name is JJ," he said with a slight smirk holding his hand out.
"Uhm, Samantha," she introduced herself with her hands locked together behind her back. She just looked awkwardly at JJ's hand that he was still holding out to her.
"Gonna leave me hanging?" he quipped motioning to his hand that was out for her to shake. She just nodded slightly and looked away from the boy.
She saw another very good looking boy approach them and wrap his arm around JJ's shoulder.
"Already hitting on someone I see?" the new boy spoke looking Samantha up and down. JJ just chuckled and shook his head.
"Nah, just helping her find her way. This is my boy JB," JJ motioned to the new boy.
"What, like Justin Bieber?" the girl smiled looking down at her feet with a small smile pulling at her lips.
"Yes. Exactly like Justin Bieber," JJ replied looking up at JB who looked confused.
"Who?" the boy inquired, causing JJ and Samantha to laugh even harder. "Uhm, no, it's John B," he corrected holding his hand out for the girl to shake. Again she just looked at his hand.
"Yeah, she doesn't really do that," JJ informed the other boy. He just nodded and put his hand to his side.
"So, person JJ hasn't introduced me to, how long are you staying here?" John B asked her taking his arm off JJ's shoulder.
"It's Samantha, and I actually just moved here, so I guess, forever," she said pushing a piece of hair behind her ear and nodding.
He lifted his eyebrows and nodded with her. The three of them just stood there in awkward silence.
"Where do you live?" John B asked after a few seconds, "Not to sound creepy. I just mean like in what area like the general area of where you live," he corrected after realizing how weird it sounded to ask a total stranger where they lived. Samantha just chuckled at the flustered boy and pushed her glasses up her nose slightly.
"Uhm I think it's called Gilbert Street?" she said as more of a question. The two boys just looked at each other, their smiles fading. "Is something wrong? Am I on the wrong island or something?" she asked with a joking tone but realized that it wasn't actually that funny.
"Dude, she's a kook," JJ whispered, not that quietly, to John B, who just nodded.
"I'm sorry- a kook? What- what is that?" she asked starting to get a bit self-conscious.
"Nothing bad, it's just... there are two sides of this island. The figure-eight and The Cut. The figure-eight is the "rich" side and The Cut is... y' know," JJ informed scratching the back of his neck.
"The people who live on the figure-eight, we call them kooks and the others who live on the cut are called pogues." John B continued. Samantha nodded her head, still slightly confused.
"See, you live on the figure-eight, you're a kook. You have money. We live on the cut." JJ motioned to himself and John B, trying to explain this odd tradition of the island.
"So, because I live on Gilbert Street, that means I'm a crazy rich kid?" Samantha asked trying to get this sorted in her head.
"Well... kind of, but not really. Like, kooks are the type people to have two houses, and pogues are the ones with two jobs just to provide for themselves. Most of the pogues don't get along with kooks," John B tried to sound less harsh than calling her a rich bitch. She just nodded.
"So we're supposed to hate each other?" she asked nodding to herself.
"How about this, Samantha. Tomorrow night, John B and me are throwing a party-"
"Actually it's John B and I," Samantha corrected with a slight smirk. JJ's eyebrows raised as he was cut off. He blinked a few times as a smile grew on his face.
"Well, John B and I will be throwing a party at the boneyard tomorrow night. You should come." JJ corrected himself as he made a point of jokingly mocking the girl. She just smiled and nodded.
"Ok sure. Just one problem," she said looking at her feet, "What the hell is a boneyard?" she asked looking back up at the boy who now had a smirk playing on his face.
"I'll show you, it's right on the way to Gilbert Street," he said turning and walking off not even looking to make sure she was following, John B doing exactly the same. The girl quickly scrambled to catch up with the boys who were already a few yards ahead of her.
"Slow down! I got little legs!" she shouted, picking up the pace.
