This is home

"I think this is it," Samantha said to the two boys, who were walking up the pathway behind her. She reached for the gate latch and pushed her key into the lock. Once the gate opened, the three of them stepped into the yard. They all looked up at the large house in front of them. There were a few boxes strewn about the yard, but other than that, the yard was fairly empty. There were a few empty garden beds, and a small patio with a table and two chairs.

"Oh, so you're rich, rich," JJ said, disbelief laced his words. John B just nudged the boy with his elbow as JJ whispered a small apology.

Samantha walked up and opened one of the totes sitting next to the large front door. She picked up a small garden gnome out of the tote. She rolled her eyes and turned to the boys holding the gnome up.

"The fuck is that?" John B asked taking the small decoration out of her hand.

"That is Joseph. My dad's favorite garden gnome," she said shaking her head. The boys just chuckled, and John B handed Samantha back the gnome.

"Joesph?" JJ asked with a small chuckle.

"Yes, Joseph! I named him when I was like 10," Samantha said, remembering the exact day her dad brought the small decoration home. She smiled fondly at the memory.

"Anyway, we should probably get going," John B said as he started walking towards the gate. JJ followed closely behind him.

"Okay," Samantha replied as she headed to the front door, "I'll see you around," she shouted as she opened the front door and watched the boys leave her yard.

Once she closed the door she leaned her back against it and sighed.

"I'm home! I made it here without dying!" she shouted to her father, who was somewhere in the house. "Not that you would care if I died anyway," she muttered under her breath.

"Good sweety! I just put the last of your boxes into your bedroom," he said as he came down the stairs. When he walked into the entryway, he noticed the garden gnome in her hand. "Hey, why do you have Joseph?" he asked with a small laugh.

"Oh, I just found him in a tote outside," she explained walking past her father, and up the stairs. She looked into all of the doors until she reached the last door, which was the door to her new bedroom.

She entered the large, bright room and looked around to see all of the boxes and suitcases stacked against one of the walls. She looked around and took in the large windows that had a great view of the water.

She walked to the windows and pushed one open. She stepped out of the window onto a small bit of roof and looked around at the back yard. There was a pool and a small jacuzzi. Beyond that was a grassy area with a few vegetable gardens. She looked further towards the dock that led to their boat that sat in the water.

"Wow, this is a beautiful home," a man's voice spoke. Samantha quickly ducked so she wouldn't be seen by the two men who had just stepped onto the back patio.

"Well for almost 500,000 dollars it better be," she heard the other man, who she had identified as her father, speak with a chuckle.

"Wowza," the unidentified man spoke with a chuckle. "And it's just you and your daughter?" he asked in disbelief. Her dad nodded and looked around.

"Four bedrooms and three bathrooms," Samanthas father informed the other man. Samantha rolled her eyes as she climbed back into her bedroom. She walked into her ensuite bathroom and looked around. A large bathtub was across from the large standing shower and fancy looking toilet. The sink and counter across from the door that leads into the bathroom.

She moved out of the bathroom and into the giant walk-in closet. There was a huge full-length mirror and a lot of drawers and hanging space.

"What the hell?" she said to herself in disbelief. "Who needs this much space? I don't even have enough clothes to fill this closet," she asked aloud, to nobody. Samantha never asked for a lot. She knew her parents had money, but she believed that one should work for what they had.

She shook her head and went to one of her many boxes. She dug through a few boxes until she pulled out a small Bluetooth speaker. She connected her phone to the speaker and started playing some music. She cleaned up and started unpacking as she danced around.

Once her bed was made and most of her things were put away how she wanted them, she kicked off her shoes and headed down the stairs into the kitchen. She opened a few cupboards and looked around the kitchen for something to eat. She settles on a piece of toast and a bottle of water. She sat down at the empty table and ate in silence.

After she ate her toast she began wandering her new house. She ran her finger along the walls as she walked through halls. She made sure to smell any flowers that she came across and look out every window. By the time she had seen every room and walked every hall, she made her way back to her own bedroom.

She grabbed a towel out of a box in her bathroom, along with a large sweatshirt and a pair of shorts. She went into her bathroom and took a quick shower. After her shower she stood and looked at herself in the mirror.

"Well Sammy... I guess this is home," she said to herself in the mirror with a sad expression. She finished getting ready to get into bed and before she fell asleep she texted her best friend from her old town of Portland Oregon. 'Made it to the island safe and sound. It's really weird here.'

She shut her phone off and turned off the lamp. After a few minutes of restlessness, she finally fell asleep in her new bed in her new house in the new town in the new state.
