CHAPTER THREE

“THE SOO”

Felt like I was getting somewhere.  The idea was to, “Go West Young Man,” following the setting sun. “The Soo,” is a fairly large city to the near north.  Took awhile to get there and used the by-pass road around the city so I didn’t see much.  Got picked up by a few guys and the occasional girl who drove me to the road leading out of town.  There was a small strip mall 1950’s era with about 6 or 7 businesses running out of it, an O.P.P station and gas stations on diagonal corners.  I sensed that the next leg would take me further into dark woods that swallowed up the highway.  I was close to my childhood home Wawa, near the shores of Lake Superior.  I had heard many hitchhiking stories about people being stuck in Wawa for like 10 days, or 2 weeks and couldn’t get a ride out.  There had been stories about people being murdered or just disappearing.  I laughed to myself that they wouldn’t treat a native son that way, at least I hoped.

It is about 150 miles from “The Soo,” to Wawa.  I was getting a few short rides but it was taking forever.  The sign said it all, “No gas for another 60 miles”.  As day’s light descended into dusk, the road became dimmer.  I somehow managed to make it to Wawa.  People asked me where I was hitchhiking too?  I told them I was going west, and that was it.

Slept in the ditch that night in my sleeping bag.  The weather was fine and the bugs weren’t too bad if you kept your head down inside your bag.
