CHAPTER THREE
JACK
‘Bloody hell Layne wake up!’ Caius yelled shaking me.
‘Why are you yelling?’ I asked drubbing my eyes sleepily.
‘Its eight thirty!’ he yelled again
‘Are you serious? Where’s Graham?’ I yelled back suddenly wide awake. Graham was who woke us up in the morning because mum was at work by then.
‘I don’t know but get up!’
I flung off my covers and pulled out my school uniform and brushed my hair and teeth and put on my face. I grabbed my bag forgetting my note book and ran downstairs. I ran back upstairs to grab my book. Mornings aren’t the best for me, rushing me in the morning is out of the question, I can’t do anything right.
Eight forty, five minutes to get to school. And pigs will fly. It’s a ten minute bus ride and a five minute walk to school. Caius was already half way down the road running to the bus stop. He got to the stop in time for the bus and I missed it. I had to wait three minutes for the next one. When it finally arrived I jumped on and yelled at the bus driver to hurry up. He ignored me and we got stuck at a set of lights. It was nine o’clock when I got off the bus. I was already fifteen minutes late for school. The only comfort was that we had a year ten assembly for the 20 minutes of first period. I got to school with in five minutes practically running across the bridge and into my class room. My class was already in there seated. Mrs Reynolds gave me a look that would have caused the world’s toughest criminal to cry and go back to mummy. There was a girl out the front; it looked like she had been talking to the class when I burst in. I hadn’t seen her before. Maybe we got two new kids today.
‘Layne Samuels, nice of you to finally join us,’
‘I got stuck at assembly miss,’
‘Nice try Layne, assembly is next Monday,’
‘Oh, sorry miss,’ I winced hoping she wouldn’t go into one of her long lectures about how school teaches you lessons about life like don’t lie because an employer will never hire you if you lie and blah, blah, blah no on cares, I would rather be doing maths right now then listen to you blabber on. Luckily she seemed to be in a hurry to let the girl finish talking.
‘Sit down and don’t you ever lie to me again because you know what happens when people lie. There is no trust and I want to be able to trust you Layne,’ I sat down in my seat and glanced at Leah in the row in front of me.
‘What happened?’ she mouthed.
‘I’ll tell you later,’ I mouthed back.
‘LAYNE SAMUELS!’
‘Yes miss,’
‘First you arrive twenty minutes late to my class then you think you can chat. Be quiet or you have detention. Turn around Miss Turnbull and if I see you turning around again you can sit up the very front with me,’ she said angrily
‘Yes miss,’ Leah and I said at the same time
‘Please go on Jack,’ she said to the girl at the front.
‘M mum dad and I moved here three days ago and,’ she went on but I wasn’t listening. So Jack was actually a girl. Something about her was familiar, she had wavy blonde hair, she was short and she had …. Purple eyes. She was a spiting image of me. I don’t know what it was but I didn’t like her one bit.
I didn’t have a chance to talk to Leah till lunchtime.
‘So why were you late?’ Leah asked as we sat down in the sunny year ten quadrangle.
‘Mum and Graham had a massive fight last night and Graham wasn’t there in the morning so there was no on to wake me and Caius up so we were really late,’
‘What was the fight about?’
‘It’s personal,’
‘Layne I’m your best friend, you tell me everything, personal or not,’ Leah pointed out.
‘Yeah I know but Leah I’m really not allowed to tell you,’ I wanted to tell Leah about Simon but I wasn’t sure how he would react and I didn’t really want anyone to know until I had sorted it all out.
‘Fine,’ she said but she didn’t sound fine, she sounded really annoyed at me.
‘Hey Le, why were you angry last night?’
‘I wasn’t angry, who said I was angry?’
‘I know you were angry, was it about Jake?’
‘What about Jake?’ Jake said coming up and giving me a kiss.
‘It’s personal,’ Leah said darkly. She was more than angry, she was dam right pissed off.
‘HI Leah,’ the new girl said coming up to us. She took one look at Jake holding my hand and frowned
‘HI I’m Jack who are you?’ She smiled sweetly. Ugh, she was flirting with my boyfriend.
‘Jake,’ he answered her letting go of my hand to wave. He was beaming like he was talking to some kind of celebrity.
‘I’m Layne,’
‘I didn’t ask your name,’ I was fully taken aback, what a rude bitch. ‘Oh wait, is your brother Caius?’
‘Yeah,’
‘Everyone’s talking about his party on Saturday night; it must have been great,’
‘It was my party too,’
‘Well no one was said anything about you,’ she smiled ‘Leah, your going out with him right,’
‘Yeah I am,’ she smiled happily
‘Wow, good work, did you want to come to the canteen with me?’
‘Sure,’ Leah picked up her bag and walked across the quad to the canteen talking about how good looking Caius was with Jack. Ugh it made me sick. How could they say that about Caius, he was absolutely repulsive. At least now I had a reason to hate Jack.
‘She’s nice,’ Jake said trying to take my hand again
‘Yeah,’ I scowled pushing his hand away.
