Serena looked so beautiful with her beautiful pregnancy glow, I couldn't believe she was mine. Or mine for right now.
I was incredibly scared to tell her about the DNA test but I know I needed to, I couldn't wait until tomorrow. No matter how perfect tonight was.
When we got home, Serena kicked off her shoes and went straight for the couch.
I let out a chuckle, "You're adorable."
"I mean duh." Serena rolled her eyes with a smile.
I sat down next to her and took her small hand in mine.
"Baby, we need to talk." I told her.
Serena looked at me with a concerned look and sat up.
"What's going on?" She asked but before I could answer my phone went off.
I let out a sigh and checked my phone. It was Joe, he never called me this late which made me worry.
"I'm sorry, Serena." I sighed again and answered it. "Hey, Joe."
"Jason. Jason, I need you to come to the hospital. Please." Joe begged, he sounded like he was on the edge of breaking.
"What's going on?"
"Rebecca. She's in the hospital, Jason. Please come down."
I looked at Serena with concern all over my face. "I'll be there soon, is Kiran there?"
"Yes, can Serena come to be with him?"
"Of course, hang on, Joe. We'll be there soon." I hung up and looked at my wife. "Rebecca is in the hospital."
"We need to go be with Joe."
I nodded and we rushed down to the hospital. I felt so horrible for Joe, what could have happened?
When we got there, we met Joe in the waiting room. He looked like a complete reck, his eyes were red and puffy signalling he had been crying. Kiran was curled up in one of the chairs sleeping while he held his teddy bear against him tightly.
"Joe," I said and hugged my best friend. "What happened?"
"We were on our way home and a car came out of no where and hit the side Rebecca was on. She isn't doing good, Jason. I only came out of the crash with a few minor wounds but she's in surgery now."
"Oh god, Joe. I'm so sorry." I hugged him again. "We're here for you."
"I need her, I love her."
"I know you do, it's going to be okay." I looked over at Serena and she went over to Kiran.
She pulled him onto her lap and he instantly curled up against her. He sure loved his aunt.
"Come on, Joe. Let's get some coffee into you."
Joe nodded and looked back at Kiran. "Will you be okay here with him?"
"Of course, Joe. Get some coffee, you really need some."
Joe nodded and followed me down to the cafeteria where we got the shitty hospital coffee.
We sat down at a little table by the window and Joe ran a hand through his hair. "I need her, Jason. But I know she's not going to make it..."
"Don't talk like that, Joe. You have to have hope." I reminded him. I couldn't believe my best friend was going through this, he didn't deserve this. Rebecca didn't deserve this.
"They said she wasn't doing good, that she was in a bad condition."
"No matter what happens, we'll get through this. We'll help you with Kiran."
Joe nodded and drank his coffee. He looked like an absolute mess.
"She was pregnant, Jason."
"Was?"
Joe nodded. "She had a miscarriage a couple days ago."
"Joe, you should have told me, you should have said something. You know I'm here for you no matter what."
"You have your own shit going on."
"That doesn't matter, Joe. You're my best friend, you're my second brother. You're incredibly important to me."
Tears suddenly started rushing down his face. "I'm sorry."
"Joe, don't be sorry." I pulled my best friend into a hug. "You and Kiran are more than welcome to stay with us."
"Thank you, Jason. Would you guys be able to take Kiran tonight?"
"Serena can, I'm going to stay here with you. You don't need to be alone, not now. Especially not now."
Joe nodded with a small smile. "I guess we should go back."
I nodded and helped Joe up before throwing out our coffee cups.
We headed back up to the waiting room and found Serena sitting with Kiran in her arms still. He was still asleep but was attached to Serena.
"Has he woken up at all?" Joe asked as he sat across from Serena.
"Not yet, he's sleeping good."
"Good," Joe said as he ran his hand through his dark hair.
A doctor came through the door and into the waiting room.
Joe stood up right away and went over to the doctor. After a few minutes, the doctor left with a dreadful look on his face.
Joe turned back to me with tears streaming down his face.
I knew right then that it wasn't good.
"Joe," I got up and hugged him. "It's okay."
"She's gone."
