Frank rushed to his safe spot, his eyes burning but refused to let the tears fall. He felt his head spin with questions that made him light-headed, feeling overwhelmed with the screaming in his head of what the hell he did wrong. What had caused Nea to act the way she did?

Frank swallowed the hard lump in his throat before he took the walk of shame towards the lodge. He opened the door and stopped, his eyes scanning the room. Joey was on the left, looking confused, Susie on the right, looking nervous, and Julie in the middle furious. They all had their masks off so Frank took off his, looking at everyone slowly.

“Um.. is everything okay? Why does this look like an intervention?” Frank asked, making Julie glared at him. “Yeah, this i-”, “Frank, is there something you want to tell us?” Susie asked, cutting Julie off as she began to chew on a hoodie string. It was a telltale motion she did when she was stressed out. “Yeah, is there something that’s bothering you bud?” Joey asked slowly, leaning over with his elbows on his knees.

“I- huh- what? What are you guys on about?” Frank asked slowly before Julie let out a frustrated howl. “Just tell us! Why are you wanting to hang out with the survivors so much? You have us! You have me! What are we doing so wrong that you’re just ignoring us huh!? Do you no-”

“Julie, calm down! He doesn-” Joey started but Julie was only seeing red. “Shut the hell up Joey!” She hissed, turning back to Frank. “Could you not trust us enough?? You used to! What the hell changed!? Did we change or was it you!?”

Silence. There wasn’t even the faintest sound of breathing as not a soul dared to. Frank gripped the mask closed to him as he growled, “I didn’t change, I grew up. Maybe you should give it a try Jules.”

He shouldered past her when she suddenly turned and shoved him back, causing him to stumble and dropped his mask. The mask fell out of his clutches and found itself by Julie’s feet. She tried to walk over to him before stepping on his mask, losing her balance, and fell hard on her back.

CRACK!

Julie’s eyes widened in utter horror as she felt something break underneath her back. She slowly got up, moving to the side when she saw the mask in pieces. Her hands slapped over her mouth as she watched Frank fall to his knees as his hands shakingly picked up the four pieces that it had shattered into.

“Frank.. I….I didn’t mean… It was an accident… I-” Julie choked as she felt Joey and Susie had jumped up, and watched in disbelief of what had unfolded in front of them. Frank turned to the stairs and walked up, stopping at the last step before looking at her.

“Family doesn’t force you to tell you anything, they support you and have your back. Too bad you missed the memo.” He muttered before disappearing into his room.

Frank was looking down at his mask, shaking his head as he walked over and tried his best to fix it. Tape? Nope. Glue? Nope. Nothing seemed to work. He banged his hand on the desk before holding his head. The mask meant too much to him to get rid of, the only thing valuable he had left from the outside world, from a friend he lost due to his stupidity.

He sighed, gently fitting the pieces of the mask together and put it into a small container. He decided to wear another mask, the one he dubbed the ‘Drop out’ mask. He called it that after he tackled a referee that called him a ‘faggot’. He ended up nearly beating the guy to an inch of his life and left with the guys mask as a trophy, never stepping foot into the school after that incident.

Frank set the mask down and sighed, laying down on his bed as his mind traveled back to his friend. His friend was always there for him. His friend that he left once he jumped from foster home to foster home and lost contact when he met his gang. Maybe it was for the best due to what happened to them, however, he wondered how his friend was doing from time to time.

---

“Hey! Still looking for that turtle?” Frank asked, peeking out from the fence that separated their property. “Jeff got out again, probably eating shit in your garden again.” The annoyed tone didn’t match with the smiling, fanged face mask that he was wearing. Frank began to snicker, shaking his head.

“He probably was running from you. but alas, there is no shit loving turtle here.” Frank told him as he hopped the fence and landed gracefully, punching him in the shoulder. “So, what’s up because it’s definitely not you,” Frank smirked, putting his hand above his head. Even daring to go as far as giving it a nice pat-pat.

That earned a very deserving jab to the stomach, causing Frank to slightly bend over and chuckle. Once he recovered and got his breath back, he noticed that his friend had sat down on the sidewalk.

Frank walked over, sitting down next to him. “Why do you act like that?” His friend asked him while Frank’s smile slightly fell, bringing one of his knees close to his chest while the other remained stretched out. His chin gently rested on his knee as his eyes seemed to be in an all completely different place.

“I don’t have a family. I just have a roof over my head and people who put up with me but I can’t complain.” He told his friend, making him give him a side glance. “No family? But don’t you live with that married couple?”

Frank gave him a look, shaking his head. “No. I like to see that family will always have your back and support you, even if you don’t care much about their choices. That’s what I’m looking for but… it seems like I’ve run out of luck.”

His friend got up, ran inside before coming back out with a box. “I know it isn’t much but I made it. It’s for you since...well, it’s your birthday.” Frank grabbed it and opened the box, his mouth fell open as his eyes soaked in the glorious sight. It was a mask that had two huge circles for eyes with punch holes with a huge, toothy grin.

Frank felt something wet roll down his cheek as his fingers gently moved down the mask. “Frank are you cryi-” His friend was suddenly cut off as Frank hugged him tightly, his head buried into his shoulder. His body shook as he tried holding back the tears but ended up spilling out from his tear ducts no matter how much strength he had to keep them back.

“Thank you…. Thank you so much Archie... I’ll never let anything happen to it. You have my word.”

Frank gently wiped his eyes, letting out a shaky breath. “I’m sorry Archie… looks like I’m shit at keeping my promises too.”
