Harsh wind hits Blue's eyes causing tears to form and blow off the sides of her face and on her bare legs millions of goosebumps grow as she races behind JJ on her dirt bike. Following him down a make shift driveway, dirt sprays up and hits her. She rides through the cloud of dry soil and stops, turning off her bike and taking off her helmet. "I told you not to come." JJ snaps at her. "Seriously? We're not even going into your house. Plus, you and I both know you're safer if someone is with you." Blue retorts chucking her helmet to the ground. "Fine, blow torch and then we're outta here." He mumbles walking into the large garage, Blue follows behind him. Smiling as she reminisces the memories of them playing out here while their mothers sat by the water.
"Kie, this better work." JJ says walking up to the van where Sarah and Kiara sit with the door open. "We can't pawn this if there's a giant wheat symbol on it." He says picking up one of three gold bars. "It's gonna work." Kiara responds holding the torch up. Blue brings one of her moms pots out to John B's yard where they have an old propane stove set up. "My mom is going to kill me for this." She says placing the pot on the stove. "She's gonna kill you for getting rich?" JJ asks jokingly. "Hey, it's your mac and cheese that she won't be able to make anymore." Blue shrugs, JJ lightly punches her. "Why did you use the mac and cheese pot?" He whines as kiara puts the three gold bars into it. "You can buy a new one when we pawn this shit." Kiara states putting safety glasses on and lighting the torch.
"hell of a job melting it down, Dr. Frankenstein." JJ says looking at the three gold pieces forged together noticeably bad. "Like you could've done better." She rolls her eyes at him. Just by the look of the gold and the fact that it's six teenagers walking into a pawn shop calls for disaster. "Guys, they're just gonna tip is off. We should just wait until we get more gold and then become famous for finding the lost treasure of the Merchant." Blue huffs getting out of the van. John B shushes her. "Just calm down, okay?" He says putting his hand on her shoulder. "Easy for you to say, you're not the one pawning this piece of shit off." JJ mutters and leads the group inside. "Afternoon, ma'am. I see you buy gold." He says immediately upon entering the shop. "That's what the sign say, don't it?" The lady asks. "Well, I sure hope you buy a lot of it because i'm about to blow your mind." JJ says and pulls the hunk of gold out of his back pack. The lady's eyes open wide in shock. "How bout them gold apples?" He purses his lips. The sales lady starts laughing at him as she scans the room looking at each of them. Blue's heart skips a beat and quickly turns always pretending she's looking at some of the knick knacks in the shop. "That ain't real." The lady chuckles. Blue gets ready to bolt out of the shop, knowing everything is about to go downhill. John B looks at her and grabs her arm before she can even take a step. "It's fine, she's probably just going to get someone else to check it." He whispers. "JB, this was literally the worst idea ever. Who's going to believe six teenagers that bring in seven pounds of gold? No one." Blue rolls her eyes. "Fine, if your so worried then go wait outside ready to drive the getaway car." John B speaks quietly and fast, he hands her the keys, Blue takes them happily and walks right out of the shop door. "Stupid fucking plan, but no, no one believes me." She kicks some rocks as she opens the driver side door and sits down.
"Get in the back, Blue." John B says walking up to the open window. "So, how'd it go? Did the plan fail just like i thought?" Blue asks crawling into the back of the van. "Well, it didn't go as planned, but we're still getting the cash." JJ responds placing an arm around Blue's shoulders. John B starts up the van and gets going on the road. They move further and further away from town and deeper into the middle of no where. Blue leans her head on JJ's lap and drifts to a light slumber. "How is she always sleeping?" Sarah questions. "One of her many talents-" Pope chuckles, "put Blue in a moving vehicle for more than, like 15 minutes and she's out." JJ continues shrugging. "Anyways, so they keep money out here?" Pope asks. As they drive farther down the road, Sarah turns around. "I've never even heard of resurrection drive." She says. "Cause your rich." JJ mutters. Kiara glares at him, "You've never heard of it either." "There's nothing but weeds back here." Kiara says looking out of the window. The sound of sirens makes each of their hearts skip a beat. "Shit cops." "Out here?" "JJ hid your bag." Everyone scurries around hiding things. "Blue wake up!" JJ shouts shaking her shoulders. She wakes to everyone panicking. Blue looks around at their surroundings, a man with a mask on walks by the van with a gun. "Guys! That's not-" The click of a gun cuts her off. The guy points the gun inches from John B's face. "Shit." Blue whispers.
"Everyone out of the car!" He shouts after John B opens the door. He points the gun at the open door as they all get out. Each trembling in fear scared for their lives. "Hurry up! Get out the car!" The guy demands. JJ follows behind Blue hands in the air. The guy pushes the gun towards Blue which JJ immediately steps in front of her. "All right! Just relax!" JJ shouts at him hands still in the air. "Shut the hell up! Shut the hell up!" He screams jabbing JJ in the chest with the gun. Blue tightly closes her eyes as her stomach drops, she begins to shake and sweat. "We'll be okay." John B whispers to her as it's all he can do to calm her. "Lay down in the ditch!" The guy yells. They all begin to lower to their knees hands still up. "On your hands and knees! Face in the ground." He demands. "Don't let me see you look up!" He walks away. Bodies on the ground, faces in the dirt they all fear for their lives. "I'm gonna throw up." Blue whispers crying. "It was a set up." Kiara says. "That old bat shanked is." JJ adds. No one looking up as instructed. They all thought their summer would be anything but what it has become. John B slowly gets up as Sarah grabs him telling him not to. "Oh my god, John B." Blue cries quietly. JJ puts an arm around her the best he can while not moving. "Just close your eyes and plug your ears." JJ tells her, Blue gently nods her head and does as told. "Alright, just stay like that unless you want your brains blown out all over this road." The guy yells coming out of the van. He walks over to his car where John B hides in the back seat. JJ nudges Blue, she lifts her head as they all get up and run to the car. "I got the gun!" John B shouts as he fights the guy. As they all beat the guy down, Pope and Blue go to find the chunk of gold. By the time Pope and Blue grab the gold the guy is on the ground leaning against his car. JJ pulls of his mask. "I know this piece of shit!" He says. JJ grabs the gun and takes a jab at the guy. "Calm down!" Blue grabs him by his shirt. JJ bends down and grabs his wallet taking his ID. "We got one last stop." He says while storming off to the van.
The rest follow behind getting into the van.
They drive into a run down trailers driveway. "J what are we doing here?" Blue asks putting a hand on his shoulder. "I'll just be a second." He says getting out of the van. "Well, I'd rather not be part of JJ's beef with some lowlife drug dealer, so I'm gonna walk home." Blue announces getting out of the van with a skate board. "Blue, come-" "I'll see you guys later." She cuts pope off as she walks down the dirt driveway to the main road. As she walks down the road she thinks about JJ. About the amount of hurt he's experienced in his short life and that he's only the way he is because of it. He's always had to fend for himself, no matter the consequences. Yet he always thinks of his friends first, they're not just his friends they're his family.
"Annabelle Taylor, what are you doing walking all the way out here." Heyward asks stopping his car right next to her. She looks up at him her face stained with tears and eyes red. "Just walking home, sir." She forces a smile. "Get on in, hun." He says, not questioning her any further. Heyward is a man of 'don't ask questions if you don't want to know'. "How's your mom?" He asks making small conversation. "She's good, over on the mainland with my dad for the summer." She smiles. "Well, don't be afraid to stop by." He says parking his truck in her driveway. "Thank you, Heyward." Blue smiles getting out of the truck. She sits in one of the hammocks facing the water. The sun shines beautifully on the water as she daydreams of the summer she wished they had. Never leaving the water, calm fishing in the sunsets, movie nights in her living room, and staying up all night not realizing how late it is until the sun comes up. A normal summer. No fear, or worry, just living.
