He wasn't quite sane when he did it.
Far past the point of straight insanity but rather at the edge staring out at what he knew was there but still a step away.
He had been at this point many times. At the brink of sanity but still held fast by the chains insanity brings.
But the dull and soul destructive pattern of his life always promised the blessing of dragging him back.
Insanity brings apathy. Sanity brings empathy.
His job became that much harder with the presence of empathy.
Of course. Being forced to murder and destroy worlds promising him nothing but hatred and pain for the rest of his torturous existence is hard enough. Apathy allowed those basic feelings of pity and guilt to wash away.
Insanity was one of the few 'gifts' he was grateful for.
But still it's impossible to stay in the same state for all eternity. Fate wouldn't allow him anyhow.
It becomes boring and mundane if he's insane all of the time so Fate 'gifts' him these 'blessed' periods of sanity to watch him squirm and make decisions his otherwise insane mind wouldn't normally make.
So when he says he wasn't quite sane when he did it was just the honest truth.
Error never lied anyhow. His soul of Integrity prevented him from doing so. Well he could but honestly what good would come from lying? It's not as if anyone would believe him even if he wasn't.
His little bout of deity-given sanity was all he needed.
His normally rage-filled fights and just basic interactions slowed considerably. There was no point in being angry really. It wasn't any of these worlds' faults.
He couldn't even bring himself to be angry at Ink. And it's very clear it's his actions that cause all of Error's pain.
He continued doing his job. It's not as if he could stop.
But when he stumbled into Underswap it was a complete accident.
He truly thought it was only a copy he had fallen into.
So he did his job. But oh how wrong he was.
It was a small spark.
A spark of panic that caused him to act as he did.
He really didn't mean to but in that one moment that small spark controlled him.
So when he took Blue it was unintended. In fact he had planned to just leave both him and the soul behind but...
He didn't.
And by the stars is he glad he didn't.
Of course after slowing down and realizing his mistake it was far too late.
Why didn't he just push them back out?
Well again he wasn't quite sane. He was incapable to actually think straight at this point.
For the first few days he resorted to just watching the skeleton as he wandered around the blank Anti-void, soul in hand.
Occasionally he would leave a chocolate bar or two. It was incredibly fascinating watching the blueberry finding these treats. A little jump of excitement and a small squeal of joy was enough to motivate Error to leave out more things.
Any bit of free time he could spare was spent observing this strange but refreshing skeleton.
It was only after the first week when Error had been caught in a sneak attack in an AU that Blue became aware of his roommate.
It was a sorry excuse for a first meeting. Well, second meeting technically.
It was a wonder that the monster even came near him let alone bother to heal the numerous battle injuries Error had received.
When Error woke it was the fact that the blue-clad skeleton was touching him that caused him to crash.
The poor skeleton had no clue what to do and proceeded to panic while the female voice announced the progress of the reboot.
When he came to error all but disappeared. Using his strings to pull him up and out of sight.
Another few days passed. Few days? Honestly it could have been a few hours. Who knew in the Anti-void.
Nevertheless this was the time when Blue finally managed to find Error's little hideout. Well, hideout is pushing it. It wasn't hiding. It was actually very visible against the blank white.
Error had pretty much forgotten about his unintentional roommate before the skeleton plopped down next to him and while he watched Undernovela.
That was the first rock of the proceeding avalanche to Error regaining his mind.
The wonders of what patience and a kind soul can do is breathtaking.
And is all Error needed to take that one step.
Since the first honest conversation awareness started ebbing its way into Error's mind.
It was when Blue discovered a discarded pair of red-rimmed glasses is when Error gave his first real smile.
The frustrated groans over a lump of ill woven thread while knitting brought the first chuckle.
A window to a familiar edge of stars bringing stars to the eyes of the beholder earned the first laugh.
The first handshake spoke of hope and friendship.
It was a slight tremor, a glitch in the voice of the blueberry that brought a tear.
And just like that, it was over. Neither wanting it to end but the knowledge of the consequences enough.
It was a portal that earned the first hug in lifetimes of pain.
Then it was back to the same...
No.
No, it wasn't.
A blue star-eyed skeleton had been given knowledge and new awareness just as he had given to the glitch in the system.
Things would never be the same again. In fact...
It only brought the promise of the end.
