Over Cross

Chapter 9

Nine

 

Toby opened his eyes and got up quickly. He looked around, Where am I? Where’s Sam? Caroline? James? He wondered. The room was air-conditioned, and very neat. In one corner is a top cabinet filled with what seemed to be medicine. There was also a couch. Across from his bed was a door that seemed to lead to the bathroom. He heard faint beeping sounds and noticed that there were wires taped into his bodies.

Wait, am I back?! I’m in the future?!  His heart started to beat fast.  His monitor beeped louder. He ripped all the wires off of him and proceeded to leave the room. His mind feels heavy, and foggy, so he leans in the walls for support.

He limps through the empty hallway, trying to find a way out. “Hey!” he heard someone call from behind him. He froze in his tracks. “Where do you think you’re going?” He limped as fast as he could. “Hey! Stop!” the man whistled. “Security, we got a runner in the 7th Floor, Odd Wing.”

 

Seventh Floor!  

He limps on and on but his legs couldn’t take it any further so he collapses on the floor, blacking out again.

“Oh, goodness, I hope he’s alright.”

“Shh, look, he’s already waking up.” The murmurs die down as Toby opens his eyes again.

“Toby, sweetie, it’s your mom.” He looks to his left and sees her mom.

“M-mom?” his eyes well with tears. “Oh, mom!” he reaches for a hug and cries in her mom’s embrace, apologizing over and over again.

                His mom strokes his head, “Shhh, its okay sweetie, everything’s over now. You’re safe again.” She soothes him.

“We only noticed that you were gone a few weeks after. I guess we were so caught up with work, we forgot about you. I’m sorry we neglected you, son.”

“We noticed the changes slowly happening in the community. Britain became a third world country. We thought it was a prank on TV, but we felt confused just the same so we did a little research and what we discovered was mental.”

“England’s Feudal Era fell apart quickly at the rise of trade and market and guilds that promote skill. Kings became weak and lost power. The Industrial Revolution came earlier than expected, with your name on it!”

Toby’s eyes widened. “Me?! Immortalized by history textbooks and research papers?! How?!”

“Yes, yes, it said that you pioneered change after helping an old man with the wheel barrow. You had conventional tools that sparked progress. “ *incite more examples*

“Because of the sanitary measures you taught them, they became clean and no Black Plague happened. You were that influential.”

“Here’s more. Since there had been no Black Plague, the population in Britain increased, the economy could not support the rising population. It became a poor country and was soon invaded by Italy, German, and Russia.”

“Britain, in real life, was a world dominating power. But since you altered time, it became a third world country, and its colonies were invaded by Italy, Germany, and Russia. There was no America. Africa’s a first world country, and so is Philippines, and other Asian countries as well. Those three are the only powerful countries in Europe. The World Leader is Japan, and the Civilization was called the “Eastern Civilization”

“But thanks to our colleagues, we were able to reverse the changes you made and turned everything back to normal! As if nothing happened!”

“What what?!” Toby perked up. “What happened to Sam?! Caroline, James?! King William’s kingdom?”

“Same as before you arrived. It was thriving and progressive community, as usual. Until it was invaded and burnt down.”

“WHAT?! NO! I’VE GOT TO GO BACK!”

“Tobuscus Fletcher, you have done enough trouble for a lifetime” her mother placed her hands on her hips. “What you did caused drastic changes that might have resulted in a rift in space and time! You were so so  close to accomplishing it. ”

“Please son, stop this. It will harm everyone if you continue this.”

Toby was fighting back tears. "But, what about Sam?"

His mom sighed. “I guess, it’s time to say goodbye.”
