The Island

"Darling! Are you done yet?" My mother called from the house.

"Yes! Coming!" I gathered all of the bark I got from the few trees left nearby and walked to the house. I handed them to my mom and we went inside.

"Thank you Luna, this'll work for the fire." My mother was pretty famous in the area for inventing things. My community is pretty poor so we don't have heaters, so my mother made a lighter that makes a fire that lasts up to forty-eight hours at a time, the bark just helps it warm up faster.

My community lives on a small island next to Loland, a very famous country. It is famous because it is home to the first tree on earth, and people say the tree is home to Mother Nature. It is also said that only daughter of her can speak to her, and there is no evidence yet that anyone is her child.

I've always wanted to go to Loland, but it's too expensive for my mother. Luckily, every six months, they chose one 11-15 year old to come learn at the academy there. I am finally old enough, so I sent my application in and I find out if I go next week! I doubt I will though, everyone has a small chance of going. But people older and younger than those ages can go too because the person chosen can pick two people to go along with them. Usually parents.

That night I could barely sleep, just like the other nights, thinking about next week.
