Since you are writing about something that cannot exist, you should be magical in every way. Being magical helps the readers to widen their imagination thus it makes them happy.
Begin with the protagonist's unique power that differentiate him/herself to other human beings. Continue with his/her unusual surroundings.
Of course you can use any characterization with your characters: you can even use a talking animal to show that it is magical, for it is unusual, as animals do not talk. Anything would do.
