Melody

"Hi, my name's Melody." I looked at the strange boy with a smile, hoping to make friends with him. He was new to town and I believed everyone deserved to have friends... even if they wear clothes that make them look kind of funny.

"My name's Killian." He reached his hand out as if he wanted to shake mine, but I didn't know him, so I simply shook my head instead. I told him that I hadn't seen him before and he replied by telling me that he moved from somewhere far away.

I laughed at his comment and asked if he wanted to be friends, as all little kids do. Watching him nod his head, I took off in the opposite direction, daring him to try and chase after me as my brown hair bobbed up and down in its two restraints either side of my head.

"You know I'm fast right?" He laughed as he chased after me, his small feet stomping across the grass faster than mine. It didn't take long for him to catch me, so when he did, we decided to stop playing that game. We both knew that I wouldn't be able to catch him in return.

"I'm nine. How old are you?" I laughed, hearing him speak. His voice was funny to me, and I couldn't help the laugh that escaped my lips. I told him that I was eight before getting a head start and running off again.

I looked at Killian as we sat under a tree. It was right in the middle of town, equal distance from each of our homes. We had been hiding for a while now, so long that the sun had set and the stars had filled the sky. We had both been hiding there to get some time away from our parents and we had found this place together. We didn't hate our parents in anyway, we just didn't agree with what they wanted from us.

I had never seen Killian the way I was seeing him now. His face was lit up in all the right places by the moonlight. I had only ever known Killian as my best friend so, to think about him as anything more felt wrong. I decided not to tell him how I felt. I didn't want to risk ruining our friendship. I was almost certain that he didn't feel the same way about me, and our friendship meant the world to me.

Killian

I met her when I was nine. She was kind and funny so, I agreed to be her friend. I never would have thought that, eleven years later, we would become best friends, nor would I have guessed that we would both be having disagreements without parents to the point that we were hiding for several hours under a tree, right in the middle of town, equal distance from each of our homes.

The moonlight reflected off all her facial features perfectly as it moved higher into the night sky, replacing the sun. She was beautiful and I realised that I was starting to see her as more than a friend, but I didn't tell her because I was certain that she didn't feel the same way and our friendship meant the world to me.

We had decided that night to make a promise of our friendship. We made a promise that our friendship would never end, not even if the most powerful force tried to tear us apart. I grabbed the pocket knife my father had given me from my pocket and carved away some of the bark on the tree, revealing a fresh, smooth surface.

She laughed at me. Melody laughed and told me that it was as if we were a young couple that were overly infatuated with each other. Thinking about her joke for a moment, I shook my head and told her I didn't care. She stood up and grabbed my hand, both of us having equal control over the knife as we carved our promise into the tree in the shape of an infinity. Putting the pocket knife away, I realised that I didn't mind that she didn't feel the same way, at least I knew she was happy to be my friend no matter what.
