CHAPTER I
( wolf moon [part one] )

THE SOUND OF TERRIFIED, hysterical screams were all that could be heard, people crying out for their loved ones. Blinding yellow flames made the house they engulfed almost impossible to see, and thick black smoke contaminated the air, making it hard to breathe.
Tossing and turning, Ruby's eyes moved rapidly beneath her closed lids as the disturbing dream took over her mind. She only awoke when a sharp tapping noise repeatedly came from her window, causing the girl to shoot up into a sitting position, her breathing ragged and her heart racing.
Running a hand through her messy ebony hair, Ruby took a deep breath trying to calm herself before she kicked her blankets off and swung her legs over the side of her bed, allowing her feet to sink into the soft, fluffy rug that covered the laminate floor beneath her bed.
"What the hell are you two doing here?" She whisper-yelled after going over to her window and pushing it open to see her two best friends smiling up at her from the ground below.
"Okay, I know it's late, but you're gonna wanna hear this," Stiles insisted. Ruby leaned against the window ledge and crossed her arms over her chest as she waited to hear his excuse. "My dad got called in, along with every officer in the Beacon Department and police state."
Her eyebrows shot up, "what for?"
The two boys glanced at each other before looking back up at Ruby's window as Scott spilled the news, "some joggers found half a dead body in the woods."
Her jaw fell open in shock as her eyes went wide, "no way!"
"Oh, yeah!" Stiles didn't do a very good at concealing his joy, while Scott looked disturbed and demonstrated a more normal reaction to this kind of news.
"Give me a sec, I'll be right down." Ruby retreated from the window as she grabbed a pair of black leggings from where they had been left hanging over the back of her desk chair.
She swapped her plaid pyjama shorts for the leggings and tossed a grey hoodie on over her t-shirt. Shoving her raven locks up into a messy bun and wiggling her feet into her battered white Converse, Ruby returned to the window and opened it fully so that she could climb out. She used the drain pipe that ran just outside her bedroom window to effortlessly climb down the side of the house, leaping from the pipe a couple feet in the air and landing in front of the boys.
"And she sticks the landing!" Stiles yelled.
"Shh!" Ruby hissed, slapping her hand over Stiles' mouth, "do you want my dad to hear you?! He'll kill me if he catches me sneaking out on a school night!"
"Sorry." Stiles' muffled reply came from behind Ruby's hand. Her baby blues glared at him as she removed her hand. Stiles looked at her face and a concerned frown fell over his mole-speckled face when he noticed the beads of perspiration glistening off her forehead. "Are you okay? You're sweating." He observed, knowing she couldn't have been sweating that much just from climbing down from the window.
"Yeah, I just had a nightmare, so I guess I should thank you for waking me up." Ruby confessed, shoving her hands into the pockets of her hoodie.
"See, I told you she wouldn't be awake at this time," Scott spoke up, nudging Stiles to prove his point, "she decided to get a good night's sleep for school tomorrow, like a smart person."
