*Cora*
A soft sound trickled into my dreamless state. It was so melodic. And pretty. Very pretty. I liked it.
I didn't know why I was hearing it now, but no part of me wanted it to stop.
It was that time in the morning where I was almost awake, but not actually coherent. I could hear things from the world but I sure wasn't processing them. Just enjoying them.
It was one of the prettiest sounds I'd ever heard and oddly enough, I couldn't shake the feeling that it was familiar.
I let the sound bring me to full consciousness and only then did I realize it was my boyfriend Theo playing the piano and singing along. He and Jayden Cohler, his best friend of a lot of years and famously sought after drummer, had turned one of the many bedrooms in Theo's huge house into a music room to help their careers.
See, somehow, I had found myself go from a no-one-with-one-friend in high school to being the girlfriend of the hottest pop star in the world, Theo Archer. It's a long and complicated story that started with a table in the mall food court, and then involved the beach, a small pizza place, underground MMA fighting, my previously dead brother coming back from the dead, some kidnapping and torture, and then my brother dying for real.
Roughly eight months ago, there was a huge incident (read: war) between two gangs that Theo and I had been pulled into, along with Jay and his girlfriend/my best friend, Elle Redding. That was the night my brother, Daniel, had died for real and was, not coincidentally, the night I had also almost died. However, that was also the night we gained protection of the biggest and most powerful gang in all of Los Angeles: Rue de la Mort, and put an end to the Brothers of Hell, the ruthless, horrible gang that had tried to throw a coup d'état over de la Mort.
As Daniel had inadvertently pulled us into the gang war, in which both sides associated in the underground fighting ring both Theo and Jay had been, actually coincidentally, involved with, Daniel had made Theo promise not to get to close to me until "things were ok" (a phrase that still pisses me off) for my protection. After that night at the dock with Daniel's life-ending fight, we'd received word that we were under protection from Rue de la Mort and Theo and I finally got together.
Anyway, I finally pulled myself out of bed and trotted down the hall to the music room. I leaned on the door frame and watched Theo's back as he poured himself into his art. His voice rung out in a perfect harmony and sounded just as beautiful as it did on his albums.
After a few moments, I walked over to the newly placed padded bench places against the wall and to the side of the piano. Newly placed because I'd recently found a new hobby watching Theo play.
As soon as he saw me, Theo, my E, cut off his music.
"Hey, Pip," he said with small smile at me. "Looking as cute as ever with the bed head."
I shot him a playfully dirty look. "Ha. Ha." I nodded at the piano. "You got up pretty early for that. Sounding pretty great, too. Is that one of your new ones?" I asked eagerly while trying to stifle a yawn. Ever since his last batch of new music that came out last December, I loved when I got to listen to the stuff he was coming up with now.
Did it have anything to do with the song he wrote specifically for me and was completely about how much he loved me? The one that hit #1 on the charts the week it came out because it was both such a damn bop and also because the lyrics made literally any girl melt?
Nah, never.
He shook his head, chuckling and gently stroking the keys. "Nah, just playing some oldies, you'll know when I'm playing new stuff this early in the morning. I'll get too excited and I'll wake you up to drag your cute ass with me so you have to listen to it. And thanks. I don't know why but I woke up early and for once didn't feel like sleeping." E finally looked up from the keys and studied my face, his immediately creasing with worry. "Baby, you look really tired. Did you ever get back to sleep last night?"
