Chapter 5:
I started to go towards him as fast as I could. I used drafts of wind to stay float as I ran towards him. Due to being in such a small area for years, I wasn't able to build up speed without some outdoor training, so I wasn't prepared for this.
Xander climbed up on the railing, turned around to face the horizon. He raised his arms to create a T, and closed his eyes. He stood like that for just a moment, unmoving.
I didn't waste any time looking at him. I ran at him faster. "Xander!" I yelled. I didn't think that he could have heard me, because he didn't move at all. "Xander, what are you doing?" I said again. He didn't do anything.
Then, he started to lean forward. He was going to fall. I was running with all of my might, as I might be able to catch up to him. I leaped forward as he was about to fall.
And I felt his hand as I gripped onto him from the side of the balcony as I tried to keep my balance. His eyes opened, and he looked up at me. "Coco?" He says.
"What are... you doing?" I struggle to say. I am trying to pull him up, but he's much heavier than me. I start to slip.
"I...I...I don't know." He says. He looks up at me. Tears started to well up in his eyes. I became distracted, and I nearly let go.
"Grab onto me." I say. I can't let him go. He's done so much for me. I won't let him take his own life. He reaches up with his other hand onto my arm, and I pull him backwards. He grabs onto the ledge, and uses me to assist his other hand up.
With that little push though, I lose balance. I start to fall forward, as Xander is able to push himself back up onto the ledge. He isn't able to react in time though, as I, myself, fall forward, off the ledge.
I'm able to turn myself front side up quickly. It feels like everything was going past me in slow motion. It even felt like my blinking was slowed down. Xander was trying to grasp for me, maybe trying to help me. Maybe he is going to use his powers to stop me. Nothing was going to be able to stop me though. Xander had reminded me time and time again that if I was under lots of pressure, my powers wouldn't work correctly, and I was under a lot of stress, so it was clear that my powers weren't going to help. I also knew that I wouldn't have enough time to stop myself, so I didn't even try to use my powers.
This was it. This was the end for me. I didn't even get to use my powers for good. Two years of difficult training was now useless. If I would have just said no to Hero about joining the club, or going to the event, then I could have avoided killing myself to save Xander.
I turned back around to see the ground. I was going to most likely land in some flowers. It could help break my fall, but only when I have already died. There was no way some plants are going to help me live.
As I fell closer and closer to the ground, and further and further away from Xander, I wondered if maybe I was going to finally meet Hero once again. Maybe he wasn't meant to come to New York, as I wasn't meant to either. Maybe meeting each other was the bane of our existence.
I didn't care though. I would rather live a good life, rather than a long one. I had such a great time learning about my hidden powers, and with Hero.-
I was in bed, sprawled out like a starfish. I sat up, not recognizing what room I was in. Then, I realized that I was not any ordinary bed. It was my bed, not like the one at the S-League, but the bed that was in my room, at my house. I am at my house again, and everything is perfectly intact.
I leaped up. I was actually in my room. It had my desk, my posters, my artifacts, and my drawings. Oh, how I missed creating and looking at my drawings. I was at my home for the first time in two years. I looked around, in awe, remembering all the fun times that I had in here. I didn't realize how much I had missed this place.
While looking around, I saw that I was also taller than I had first remembered. I now had a taller perspective of this room. I had grown a lot physically ever since I had abandoned this place. I also saw that I still had my outfit on.
How did I get here? It's not like I'm having a flashback because I'm taller, and I have my Supernatural outfit on. All I remember before was when I just blacked out... because I was saving Xander.
Oh no, is Xander okay? Did I save him? Did something bad happen to me? I need to get out of here. I ran out of my room, down the hall and the stairs and into the living room. I looked around, I remembered all of this, everything was right where I remembered it. No one was there though. I was alone.
I looked around for my phone. If I had that, then maybe I can call my mom or my dad and see where they are at. I could see if Xander was there. I searched the whole house frantically, and then I realized it was all the way at the S-League building, because if I wasn't there leaving, then I couldn't have gotten it from my bed.
Maybe I can email them. I rushed into my dad's at-home office and logged on to the computer. Luckily, the password hasn't changed since I had left. I got onto the internet, and emailed my mom, asking where she had went. After I had sent it, I waited for an email back.
While waiting though, I saw that my dad had no new emails. He would usually have a couple. Then, I looked closer at them, and realized that all of then were from two years ago. He must have not had any new emails for two years. There has to be an explanation for all of this.
I noticed that the sun was starting to go down now. I turned on the kitchen light. My parents would be here after they are done with work and can provide all the answers to my questions. I would be so glad to see them.
While I was waiting, I sat down on the couch, and eventually I laid down. I shut my eyes, and I slowly went to sleep.
The first thing I heard when I woke up was tornado sirens. It was nearly pitch black inside the house, and outside too. There were flashes of red that came outside of the front window occasionally. I stood up, and looked through the curtains. There were police vans roaming on the street.
It was seriously dark out, not like any night that I had remembered before. Was there an incident? I should use my powers to help save whoever is in danger!
I checked the time before I went out. On the clock it said.. Seven-thirty? Since it was September, there was no way the sun shouldn't have been out by now. Maybe it was wrong? I went over to the computer and turned it on.
I wasn't able to turn it on though. It wouldn't respond. That means the power must be out. That's why the clock must be wrong. What time is it really though? Is it currently morning, or is it in the afternoon? I walked quickly up the stairs, and into my room. I had a battery powered watch that could tell me the time.
I grabbed the watch, which was still there, and working surprisingly, and I looked at it's face. It said the same thing as the clock did downstairs, just a few minutes later. This time though, it also said A.M.. It was morning, and the sun should have risen by now.
Where were my parents? They should have been here by now! I should have seen them! I ran back downstairs and opened the garage door. Both of their cars were still here, oddly enough. Where could they be at if both of their cars were here?
I decided to go outside to see what was going on. The flashing lights hadn't stopped, and the tornado siren was still on. Do tornadoes even happen in September? Don't those sirens run on electricity?
I slowly stepped outside, and I felt a draft of cold air on my face. It was freezing outside for September. Regardless, I stood on the first stair of our small porch, and I saw that other people were outside. My neighbors and their children were looking around, as was I.
Police cars went by our area, alerting that the lights will be back on. The whole city must be out of electricity. This was no normal blackout, as it seems like it's much, much more eerie, and things are much, much more chaotic.
Then I had realized why it was so dark. It wasn't just because of the blackout, it was because there was no light pollution, no stars, and no moon. You could say there was a lot of cloud cover in the sky, but if it was this dark out, the moon would have been able to shine through the clouds.
I waited outside for a few more moments until I went back inside so I could warm up. I checked the fridge for food, but I couldn't see what was inside. I walked over to the closet and got out a battery powered flashlight. I guess I'll have to live on batteries until this blackout goes away.
I shined the flashlight into the fridge, and only had it open a tiny bit so it would stay colder for longer. I was relieved that there were lots of things to eat inside, and that it was cold in there too. I also checked the pantry, and there was food inside of there too. My parents always stocked up on food for some reason, and I'm now glad that they did.
An hour later, the electricity had returned, and I turned on the TV to see what was going on. The tornado sirens hadn't turned off, but the flashing was starting to go away, I changed the channel to a news station, and I saw immediately that it didn't matter which one I had chosen, because they were all about the same thing.
"Breaking news! As you may have already known, the sky has been blocked out by some sort of object. People around the world are walking up and seeing that the sun has not come up since yesterday. What will this mean for humanity? Chaos? War? The end of man-kind itself?"
"Scientists around the world are still studying why this event has occurred. Unexpectedly, this mass that is covering our skies is able to let certain radio waves though, but not anything else. All planes have been grounded. Transportation is not advised. Please do not leave your house at all costs, as we do not know what this mass is doing here, or if something out of this world has something to do with it. As this day continues, we will update you with what's to come."
I flipped though other channels to see what they had to say. Some of the channels weren't even working anymore. Overall, I was shocked at this news. Is this really what's happening? And is this really happening worldwide?
Who was going to watch over me if my parents weren't here? Of course, I could survive a few days, maybe even a few weeks alone, but if my parents aren't coming back, then how am I going to get food? Running water? Electricity? If there's no one to pay bills, then I'm going to be taken away!
I started to prepare a safety kit in my room, gathering materials from inside of my house. I kept the flashlight and watched with me, as they will be needed if the lights go out again, which I think they might. I've been seeing flickering again. I also gathered batteries, and a health kit, and a few water bottles in a cooler.
I made a large fort in my room. I put a large, heavy blanket over my bed and put weights on top of the blanket so it wouldn't fall. Next, I stuffed pillows found around the house in the cracks. Then, I got more blankets and pillows to get comfy. Finally, I got my kit and placed it in one of the corners. It was fun making a fort. I didn't spend much time in the fort though, because I was usually watching TV, or on the computer. I would only go in there to sleep, or to hide.
The next few weeks were long, and rough. The electricity went out nearly every day, and it sometimes lasted days. I was able to save some of the food inside the fridge by putting it down in the basement. It was very cold down there, so they didn't perish as fast.
Speaking of cold, the average temperature has been going down by multiple degrees each week. It's been getting so cold that there are small patches of ice and frost outside. With the electricity going out, it's been getting chilly inside, and I'm glad that we had so many blankets.
As the lady on the news station said, there was chaos all across New Noire. Looters have been rampant on the streets, and most people have been evacuating to find a better place. I would evacuate too, but I don't know how to operate a car.
I had also learned that none of my powers worked anymore. No matter how much I tried, they didn't work. It would have helped me so much if I could have used any of them to assist myself.
The TV stations have been slowly going out day by day. They are saying that the mass is getting thicker, and becoming more difficult to study because it contains some cyanide and other harmful chemicals.
Due to the chaos, the economy has been essentially destroyed. No one has had to pay bills, or go to their jobs, or do any work, because only the best will survive. I'm pretty sure that the president has even stepped down, along with the government, because it has gotten so bad.
Most of the neighbors have retreated to the suburbs, supposedly because they have less chance of being robbed while they are inside of the house. It doesn't make much sense to me, because if your lights are not on at certain times, looters from across the city will break in, take anything, and leave. They also break windows, and cause a lot of noise. I've heard many of the neighbors' houses being looted, and I'm extremely lucky that mine hasn't been broken into yet.
There's also been news about something else that's been killing people. For weeks, the only things that have been killing one another are humans. Hoarding food, making killing the only way to survive. Now, sometimes whole families are dying for no reason. They are found perfectly healthy one day, but completely dead the next. One person has reported that they had seen a flash before their father was killed. She was only able to make it because her father helped her find a hiding spot. She believes that the reason why her father was killed was because they had made too much noise that morning.
I try to keep quiet now, and wait in the living room, just because I don't want to be killed like her father did. I hope that this whole thing can eventually blow over, and humanity will be safe. I can go back to New York, and see Jasmine and Xander again. I hope they are doing well.
The water from the sink has been becoming more and more dark. I think there might be a pipe broken underground or something. Or at least that's what I first thought before I found a report on the water, or as others call it, black water. It's been happening all around the world, and if you drank enough of it, it would act like if you were on drugs, but deadlier.
Before I went to sleep one night, I had heard something. It wasn't loud, but it sounded like wood, and splintering. I didn't bother though, as it was probably some looters at other people's houses. I opened my eyes wide though when I saw three flashes, visible from under my eyelids. It couldn't be here. I didn't make a single sound, as if I did, I could get killed. Where was the thing that was killing people?
I heard the sound again. It was like aggressive knocking. On a door. It sounded like it was coming from my door. I froze. I didn't know what to do. Should I go up to it and see what it is? Or should I stay here. Or should I go hide in the closet like that girl did?
Then I realized why it was at my door. I had forgotten to turn off the lights before noon. Everyone knows to turn your front lights off before noon. The people who continued doing it, were killed the next day. Maybe I should go down and turn off the lights. If I stay up here, I will die eventually. I slowly got up, opened the door, and down each step like they were burning coals. I had the curtains shut, so whatever, or whoever was at the door couldn't see me.
I quickly tiptoed to the light-switch, and flicked the switch to turn off the outdoor lights. I realized soon after that the thing might want to come in even more after knowing that someone was there. But instead, I started hearing footsteps going away from the house. I was safe.
Before I went back upstairs, I peeked out of the curtains very carefully. I wanted to see what this thing was. It was difficult to make out it's face, but the streetlamp showed what it was when he had turned to leave. It was an older version of Hero.
