Hero never arrived that night. I don't know what had happened to him. Maybe he had gotten lost, or he was waiting for me the whole time. He could have been denied entry for some reason, or maybe he was waiting inside the lobby.
It seemed like the world had just forgotten him in an instant. No one was looking for him. Hero's name wasn't on the attendance sheet, while mine was. I would have tried to contact him, but I didn't have any Wi-Fi, and he didn't have a device with him anyways.
The woman listed our names one by one. As I had said, his name wasn't on there. A few minutes in silence had passed in loneliness.
We were taken out of the dark room, and onto a large stage. There were many people there, cheering, waving at us, and taking photos. I was included in a small group of people around the same age as me. Most of them were neatly dressed, while I was still wearing my school clothes. Some others were also wearing normal clothing though.
Each of our names were announced, and the crowd had cheered us on one by one, no matter who was up. Each of us were given a custom-fitted outfit to fit our body. Each outfit also had slightly different colors, I don't know why. Mine was grey with some purple lines.
After they had given us our clothes, we each got to explain why we wanted to be here. I didn't have much to say, because my main reason was because my friend had persuaded me to bring me here. I just said that I was interested in what they were doing.
After all of us were on stage, there was a fancy dinner. There were so many options to choose from! I wanted to have a taste of everything, but I wasn't hungry. I waited around for Hero to come. He couldn't just have gone missing.
There was a dance after that; mostly the parents participated. The music was classical, and nothing that I would have ever listened to. It didn't go on for too long either, so that's good.
At around nine, the parents and guests started to leave, and the other kids were wishing their parents goodbye. I stood, watching them leave. Once the adults were all gone, and everything had settled, we were ordered by the lady to follow her. Each of us were single-file, and I was in the back. No one spoke to each other, unlike a few moments ago.
We had walked into a separate building, with guards waiting for us at the entrance. Once each of us were in, they shut the door. The hall that we were going down was pure white, with light cyan markings on the ground. We all went down a staircase, and went through another door that had security waiting.
She took the time to explain what our true purpose was here, how we should feel honored to be here, and what we will be doing to train. I wasn't listening very well, as I was still worried about Hero, and looking around. Each door had a label next to it, and there were even whole halls designed for many unique rooms. You could see members training inside, pushing rocks and water towards a wall. Others were waiting for them, writing on notebooks.
The lady went down a hall named "Dorms", so I'm guessing this is where we will be sleeping at. "This is block five. The women's bathrooms are at the end of the hall, to the left. The men's bathrooms are to the right. Please get comfortable in your new rooms. Preparation for sleeping will be in fifteen minutes. Do not take showers at this time, this block will be taking them in the morning. Wait for your number to be called down, and make sure you are quick. We will be taking a tour and introducing you to each of your mentors. The boys must stay in the right room while the girls stay in the left room."
We went into our rooms, and we waited. We each got to claim our beds. I was lucky that I was able to get a top bunk. Most of the kids talked with one another, while I just awkwardly waited.
We heard each of the blocks get called down, one by one. They were spaced around three minutes apart. Once we were called, we cautiously went down to the bathrooms. We had to get done quickly, as block six was right after us.
Our rooms were mostly plain, but each of us had a small curtain to our bed for privacy. There was a big digital clock that was above the door, and glowed brightly when the lights were off. The beds were quite comfortable, nonetheless.
I didn't sleep too well the first night, I don't know why, but I think it's because I was a little scared. We had to go to sleep by ten, and wake up at seven. It wasn't all that different from my normal schedule, but we had to pick up the pace.
Once we were dressed into our new outfits, the lady was waiting for us outside our door. "I'm glad to see that you are all awake. Please follow me. You will all be eating breakfast a little later today." She explains.
She showed us each of the sections of the building, it was very large for being underground in New York. There were two floors to the building. The top part was mainly for the dorms, classes, and the dining room. The second floor, or the lower basement, consisted of mostly training areas. There were different sections for different elements for training.
Once we were done with the tour, and ate our plain breakfast, we were introduced to our mentors. "James and Kayla, you will go with Leila." The lady started to list off names, and pointed to each of the mentors listed. "George and Ben, you will go with Jerry. Jasmine and Coco, you will go with Xander."
I look at Xander. He's a tall kid with black, spiky hair. I walk up to him, like all the other students did. "Hello." I said.
"Hey." He replied.
Jasmine came behind me. She was a girl with long, wavy brown hair and light caramel skin. "Hi." She said to Xander.
"Heyo." Once we were all assigned our mentors, she let us go. Xander brings us downstairs, like all the others are. "You both will like it here." He says.
"I hope I do." Jasmine replies.
"We will be first trying to activate your earthly powers. This one in my opinion is the easiest for me. For now, we will just need to make sure that you both can activate your powers."
We all go into one of the training rooms. The room has dark walls and floor, and is relatively empty. There are targets on the other side of the room, and rocks of various sizes laid out across the wall. There is a large glass window to look out into the hall.
"Of course, you both will need some assistance before you can manipulate the elements by yourselves." He points to two ring-like objects. "These things are called Enhancers. They will help you focus on your powers better."
"Like how?" Jasmine says.
"I'm glad you asked. This special device uses magnetic fields to make the brain forced to focus in certain areas. It specifically enhances the motor cortex and imagination, to create the effect of being able to control your mind and second-body movements better."
"That's cool." I said.
"I know, right? Anyways, I need you to both put them on. They need to be turned on first, which the switch is on the power cord. All you have to do is secure it on top of your head, and make sure the cord is on the back of your head." He instructs. I pick one of them up while Jasmine uses the other, and I switch mine on. It makes a soft humming noise, and I put it over my head.
"Do I need to take off my earrings before I wear this?" Jasmine asks.
"No, no, the magnetic waves are extremely concentrated towards the brain. You would only need to take accessories off if you had eyebrow piercings or glasses."
"So, what do we need to do to lift things?" I ask.
"We aren't exactly there yet." I wasn't exactly listening to him, because I think I can try. "I need to first see if you are even capable of performing that stuff. It's easy, all you need to do is-"
"Is it this easy to pick up things?" I ask, my arm partially stretched out towards a rock, which was now floating in the air.
Xander's eyes widened, "How did you do that so quickly?"
"I dunno, I guess it was just my instincts telling me what to do. I just pretended to pick up the rock from really far away."
"It shouldn't be that easy though."
"I want to try!" Jasmine says, and puts her arms in front of her, and faces the rocks. Nothing happens.
"Jasmine, it's not going to be that easy. I don't know why Coco was able to do it so easily. Maybe it's the Enhancer itself. Coco, take the Enhancer off please, it could damage you if something's wrong with it."
I take it off and hand it to him, and he inspects it. He checks the inside and outside of it. "It looks fine to me. I don't understand why this would be happening. I guess you're just a lucky one, Coco." He shrugs. "You should wait until Jasmine is at your level, which might just be a few sessions."
