Atlas was slowly starting to wiggle around on the couch and I knew he was starting to wake up. His eyes slowly blinked open and blue orbs starting moving around the room. Okay this was officially the cutest dog I had ever seen. When he noticed me standing near the end of the couch, he immediately jumped up and stumbled over himself to greet me.

I smiled and took a seat on the floor petting and playing around with him.

His sharp little teeth were doing a number on my hands when I heard my doorbell ring.

"Atlas I think your daddy is here," I said scooping him up.

I walked over to the door and pulled it open. When I tell you I was not prepared for who was standing on the other side, I really wasn't.

"Evan," I breathed out. He gave one of his stupid half smiles and my heart stopped. Atlas started to wiggle and thrash violently in my arms and I set him down. He ran back into my apartment but I really couldn't be concerned with what he could get into at that point. I was more focused on the lying, cheating bastard standing in front of me.

"What are you doing here?" I questioned. I still couldn't believe that the was standing right in front of me. I started to feel a burn of anger bubbling in my stomach and making its way up my throat. He didn't answer at first and I repeated the question. This time harsher.

"I said, what the fuck are you doing here?" The anger started to grow hotter.

"Mads-" He started but I quickly cut him off.

"Don't you dare call me that."

"I was wondering if we could talk," he said while sheepishly rubbing at the back of his neck. He always did that when he was really nervous. I hated myself for knowing that.

"Okay, talk," I bit out at him not making a move to let him into my apartment. If he thought I would invite him in, maybe brew him a cup of tea, he had another thing coming.

Evan just sighed and shifted awkwardly around on his feet.

"I wanted you to hear it from me first," He looked so uncomfortable. "I proposed."

You honestly could have heard a pin drop. My breath hitched and I swear my vision went red. I was so tired of it. I was tired of helping everyone else find love and that one person they are meant to be with while I got left alone. What was wrong with me? Why wasn't I enough?

"Get the hell out of here," I yelled. I tried to close the door but he stuck in his foot to stop it from closing completely.

"Madison I'm sorry I just wanted to try and explain things to you. I want you to know that I was the one who messed up-" He kept trying to explain as I was trying my best to force the door closed. He managed to open it a little more and I mentally started cursing myself out for not working out more.

He kept saying words but at this point I wasn't listening to him. I was more focused on getting the door closed. This went on for what seemed like forever when a sharp, deep voice cut down the hallway and into my apartment.

"What the hell is going on here," the voice yelled. It caught me off guard and Evan used it to push open the door. At that same moment, Atlas bolted for the door. I guess he recognized his owner's voice. I watched him run out the door, suddenly he stopped right over Evans' shoes and proceeded to lift his leg, peeing over both of them. Evan was a total sneaker head. That had to hurt.

I couldn't help the laugh that came spilling out of my throat. That was what I needed at that moment. Atlas stopped and seemed to smile up at me before he bounded down the hall only to stop and sit on the boots of the man standing at the end of the hall.

Evan started trying to shake his sneakers and cursing out loud but I couldn't hear him. My eyes slowly moved up the mystery man. He was wearing heavy, black work boots, simple blue jeans, and a black t-shirt. That's not what caught my attention. His eyes were the darkest green that I had ever seen. They contrasted so strongly to his pale skin and dark hair.

I was honestly mesmerized. This was definitely the hottest man I had ever seen. My eyes locked on his and he lifted one perfectly arched eyebrow. Damn I wish mine looked like that. I quickly broke eye contact, my face growing hot.

I turned my attention back to Evan.

"It's time for you to go. I don't care what your intentions were, I want you gone. You don't get to talk to me. You don't get to try and explain yourself. You fucked up. You have to live with that now. Now get the hell out of here."

"Madi if you would just-" Evan was again cut off, but this time it wasn't by me.

"You heard her, get the fuck out of here before I make you. And trust me, you won't like that," The man said.

Evan just looked shocked like he couldn't believe what he was hearing. He looked between the man and I like he was assuming things. I for one wasn't going to correct him. He seemed to shake himself out of it and turned to walk down the hallway.

"Bye Madi. I'm sorry," He whispered out before disappearing around the corner of the hall.

I breathed out really hard and could feel the anger fading and the sadness starting to creep in. All of the sudden Atlas barked and ran over to me. He gave my legs kisses and I smiled and reached down and stroked his soft fur. He seemed like he sensed my distress and was trying to comfort me.

The boots were then right in front of my feet. I stood up and addressed the man, "Sorry you had to see that. Thanks for trying to help."

He just stared at me, like he was trying to figure something out.

"It's no problem. Thanks for finding my dog. I'll see you later," He scooped Atlas up and turned on his heels. He walked down the hallway, turned the corner and he was gone.

Later. It was almost like a promise. I shook my head and pushed the door of my apartment behind me closing it tightly. Leaning against it, I slid down to the floor and brought my knees to my chest. The numbness started sliding down my body. The silence of my apartment pushed against me. I had enough of today.
