Dark Green Eyes

The sound of my alarm woke me from my dream. I had been thinking about green eyes. I really hate myself sometimes. I needed to get over this fascination with a man I had met for all of two seconds. I was done with love, and it was going to stay like that.

Throwing off my covers, I regrettably got up and left my warm bed. I walked to the bathroom and turned on the shower as hot as it could go. Walking back into my room and I grab the outfit that I planned on wearing for the day. Since it was getting cooler outside I was more than happy to pull out my favorite color blocked sweater and black jeans. I walked back into the bathroom and jumped into the burning water. I liked the pain of standing under the blistering water. It made me feel something.

I quickly washed my hair and got out and dried off. I pulled on my clothes and began to make my way to my kitchen. I walked down the hallway from my room and stepped into the open space of the living room. My apartment was rather small and the kitchen was connected directly onto the living room, a small island separating the two spaces.

I walked into the kitchen and turned on my keurig, ready to caffeinate until I started to shake when something glinting silver caught my eye. Walking over near the couch I bent down to see Atlas's collar laying on the floor.

Shoot, I thought to myself. I must have forgotten to put it back on him when I took it off to look for his owners phone number.

At least you get to see Mr. Tall, dark, and handsome, I found myself thinking. Wait, no. I wasn't doing this. I will not do this. I told myself that I was going to be alone and learn to stay that way. I had a bad habit of getting into relationships and we all know how those have all turned out.

I picked the collar up and walked over to my phone sitting on the counter. I typed in the number and sent a quick message.

Hi, this is Madison from last night. I'm sorry I didn't realize it earlier but I forgot to give you Atlas's collar. Is there somewhere I can drop it off for you?

I set the phone down and went back to making my coffee. Looking around my apartment, I realized I really needed to clean up before my shift at the diner.

Almost three hours had passed since I sent the text and started cleaning. I was pretty satisfied with what I was able to accomplish. All the dishes left piling in the sink and the crumbs left on the counter and floor had disappeared. The laundry pile in my apartment was taken care of and I even washed my bedsheets. Glancing at the clock, I read the time, 2:15.

"Okay I have 30 minutes to get ready and then I'll leave," I spoke out loud.

I walked back into my room and changed into my work uniform. Gabe was a big fan of the old diner look and that included the uniforms. The white and red checkered shirt matched the dinner walls. Thankfully we were able to wear any bottom we wanted so long as they were black and I kept on my black jeans. I put on some quick makeup and then looked at the clock again. It was 2:45. I grabbed a water bottle and rushed out the door.

I began my walk to the diner and breathed in the fresh, crisp air. I glanced down at my phone as I walked and noticed that I had one new text message.

First you steal my dog and now you keep his collar hostage. I'm sorry but I'm not interested in you and this game for my attention is rather annoying. I'll pick up the collar around 9.

My eyes narrowed at the screen and I felt annoyance creep at my skin.

First off, I hate to break it to you, but I'm not interested either. I'm just trying to give back what's yours. Second, how full of yourself are you that you really think you can just say shit like that? I'll leave the collar outside my door so we don't have to interact and I won't risk 'annoying' you any more.

I pressed send and felt satisfied with myself. This man is the annoying one. This definitely killed any and all attraction that I had felt for him.

That's not what your eyes said last night, I saw you checking me out. Anyways, I would prefer if you didn't leave the collar outside. Considering where you live, I don't want anyone to pick it up.

My eyes slightly bulged. How rude! My apartment was perfectly nice. Sure I had slightly sketchy neighbors but that didn't mean that they would steal. Of all the arrogant and annoying people I had ever met. And I did check him out. He's hot and I'm sure he isn't oblivious to the fact.

Yeah you're hot and I was checking you out. So what? Not like you don't know it. It's too bad the personality apparently doesn't match. And whatever just text me when you're on your way.

I looked up from my phone to see the front of the diner coming closer. Checking the time, it was 2:57. Wow I guess anger really makes a person hustle. I hurried my pace and walked in, the bell dinging overhead and I took in the state of the diner. It was packed and all the waitresses seemed to be running around like crazy. Even Gabe was hustling more than usual. Great, another busy night.

I quickly made my way into the back and opened the door to the locker room. I twisted in my combination and then removed my jacket and shoved it inside. I placed my phone on the shelf and didn't miss the screen lighting up with a text notification.

Whatever, I thought to myself. I'll deal with it later.

I tied the apron tight around my waist and proceeded out of the door and onto the main floor. I plastered a smile on my face and made my way over to my first table. It was a party of 8. Yeah, this is going to be a really long day.
