When she awoke she kept her eyes closed, listening to voices and shuffling feet.

"I don't like this, guys," a thick New York accent said.

"For once, I agree with Raph. If Master Splinter finds out about this Donny-"

"I know, I know," said a voice with a logical tone. "But what do you want me to do? Leave her out on the street?"

"That could work," said accent again.

"Raph!" said two other voices in a scolding tone.

"She helped in a way that no one else would."

"Oh come on, Raph!" said what sounded like a surfer's voice. "She's kind of cute when she's sleeping; don't you think?" That's when she felt a hand lift strands of her hair off her face. She flinched, sitting up quickly and smacking the hand away. That's when she saw who the voices belonged to.

They weren't a couple of guys off the street; they weren't even human. In fact she couldn't tell what they were. Then she looked closer. Green, shells, the shape of their heads. Turtles. Giant talking turtles, each wearing protective pads on their knees and elbows, and each with a different colored mask over his eyes. She was speechless.

"You're awake," said the one in the purple mask, who had that logical tone to his voice.

"Maybe," she replied with a nervous laugh. It all felt too vivid to be a dream, but what stood before her just couldn't be real. Could it?

The one with the blue mask neared her, saying, "I'm-" but before he could finish she jumped over the back of the couch and started heading for what she hoped was the nearest exit. She didn't get far though, before red mask cut her off.

"Woah, woah, woah," he said, and she recognized the accent of the same voice that'd talked about leaving her in the street. "Where do you think you're goin'?"

"You wanted me to leave, I'm leaving." She tried to move past him, but he grabbed her by the arm with his huge 3-fingered hand.

"You do need to leave, but not before you promise not to tell anyone about this."

"Tell people? Who would believe me?" She smirked and again looked at each one of the turtles, still trying to process whether it was real or not. If she ever told people about this she'd probably be locked away in some loony bin, and it'd be for good reason. She was starting to feel a little crazy herself.

"Still," said the blue-masked one, coming to stand next to his friend in the red. "I think a promise is in order upon your departure. Just in case."

She knew at that point that she should probably just make the promise and get the heck out of there, but she knew that she would have to use this storyline somewhere! It could be her big break! Giant talking turtles, who appeared to also be some type of superheros. And Berea wasn't the type of person to make a promise she knew she wouldn't keep.

"And if I don't? What are you going to do?"

The two in front of her gave each other sideways glances, and she heard the one behind her, in the orange mask, snicker a little. Then they both grabbed her by each arm, and lifted her off her feet. She kicked both legs in a struggle to break free, but these things were ripped. There was no way she was going anywhere. They firmly placed her on the couch and then stood in front of her like a wall, crossing their arms and waiting. The one in the orange mask sat next to her with grin, an arm stretched out behind her back. There was no way she was getting out of this one, but she was intent on being difficult.

"You can't keep me here," she said, failing in her attempt to sound confident when her words came out in shaky brambles. "I have rights. And-and I have people who will be looking for me. My sister-" All of sudden she stopped, thinking of Grace. She had know idea where Berea was.

"Crap!" she said with a hand on her forehead. "My sister!" She stood up frantically only to be stopped by the turtles. "What time is it?"

"About 3 a.m," orange said casually.

"I've gotta go!"

"Well, let's be reasonable then, Berea. All you have to do to leave is promise you won't tell anyone," said purple.

"How do you-never mind. Why is a silly little promise so important to you guys? Who's to say I won't break it as soon as I leave?"

"Well of course, we'll have to keep an eye on ya," red said cracking his knuckles.

"But," purple replied throwing red a scowl. "We believe you to be a woman of your word. Especially after what you did out there with those purple dragons."

"And the fact that you're refusing to make the promise in the first place kind of says something," blue added.

"Well?" orange asked, as Berea sighed and dropped her face in her hands.

Done with the shenanigans, she finally gave in. "Fine. I promise not to tell anyone that I saw four giant talking turtles. Happy?"

"Very," blue said with a smile, and then led her to the exit. As they passed through dark, damp tunnels, Berea finally realized where she was.

There were four giant talking turtles living in the sewers of New York, and she was the only one who knew. And worst of all. she couldn't tell anybody.
