Chapter 2: My Mother's Story

How on EARTH did my mother know about that?! That was last year! She wasn't even home! She was probably on tour again. God only knows... Since she is a famous singer and all, she could be anywhere she wants, but home isn't good enough. It's always about her. 'Oh, do you think these shoes will look good on me? OMG! I love this shirt!!!!' Ugh! She makes me so mad; another reason we don't get along.  "How, in the name of God, do you know about that?! I told absolutely NO ONE!! Well, besides my bestie Jennifer...But she wouldn't tell anyone. Well... How do you know?" I was almost in tears because my mother found out, and I was afraid she was going to tell someone. 

She looks me straight in the eye. "I know what you're thinking, 'She's probably going to tell everyone.' But I won't. I only found out because Jennifer called me up one night and told me about it. She wanted to know if you were okay and everything. But, I wasn't sure. So I told her I would check up on you. But, that's not the reason why I'm here. I'm here because tomorrow is your birthday. More importantly, your 18th birthday. The birthday where your body will transform into a werewolf at midnight. That's why your body is all tingly. Because it will be your first time transforming." I look over at the time: 12:00. Well, I guess I'm not going to school today. "The first time is always your hardest so you will need a man there with you to cope you through it." 

"Why can't it be a woman?"

"Because, men make women feel more safe and protected. It's just a fact. But, you will be able to choose who you want to be with when you change, but the guy has to be single, and not with a mate already. The man you chose will most likely end up to be your mate."

"How do you know so much about this stuff?" I asked her. I just can't believe it. Either she is one crazy woman, or I am ACTUALLY GOING TO BE TURNING INTO A WOLF. 

She looks out the window for a few moments before looking back at me. " Because I used to be a part of the werewolf pack." She says this like she got kicked out or something.

"What do you mean? You 'used' to be? What happened?"

"Well, one day, I broke the rules and went out of the campus to go into town. I was 19 then and I was still learning how to control when and where I want to change. Anyways, I asked the Head Master if I could go for a run in the woods. His name was Jarrod and let's just say that he wasn't all that bad looking.  He was in his late 20's yet he was a master in fighting, he got straight A's, and he was the most popular guy in school, until he fought the Head Master in a ring and won. The rule is, if you fight the already Head Master, and if you win, you will become the next Head Master in the campus. When he won, the older Head Master-Mike- quit his job and  joined a different wolf school because of embarrassment. But, when Jarrod got the Head Master spot, girls were all over him and he went through so many girlfriends in that year. One of them was me. We had a thing going on for about a year.

     So, when I asked if I could go for a run, he didn't think anything of it because I have run through the woods before, so he just thought that I was just running again. But the thing is, I wasn't just going for a run. I was going to go into the town that was about 10 miles away. If I turn into my wolf form, it would take me about 20 minutes to get there. But, it was worth the run. When you are running in your wolf form, the only thing you think of when you are a wolf, is that you are unstoppable. It's incredible." She starts smiling from her memories. "When I got into the town, which is called Hillsburry now, I walked around. It was where I grew up. There were so many buildings that hadn't been there before and I was only gone for a year. One of the rules of being a wolf, is you can never speak with humans. But, I couldn't help it when I saw an old friend from school. His name was Anthony, but we all called him 'Spike' because he used to spike his hair everyday before school and it fit him better than Anthony. I was walking into an antique store when a man taps my shoulder. I turn around and there is my old friend, Spike, standing there smiling. He says to me, 'Cara! Where have you been? It's been forever!' I looked at him and also start smiling. I tell him, 'I can't talk to you.' It hurt for me to say those words, but I couldn't talk to him.  He was human; I was not.  He looked worried and then he said, 'What's wrong Cara?' I couldn't help but break down into tears. I so wanted to talk to him, and so I did. I was already breaking the rules of coming here, so why would it matter if I talked to him? I told him that I was going to a different school and I ran away. I wasn't supposed to, but I did. He looked so sorry for me. He took me to his house and gave me some food. I told him that I only liked meat. Any other foods made me sick. So, he cooked me up some steak and brung it to me in his living room. I took the food and stuffed my face with  it...Literally. He gave me a place to sleep since it was getting dark and if I went back now, it'd be dark and it would make him suspicious. Even though when you travel somewhere,you can trace your scent back to where you came from. So, I stayed the night and was going to go back in the morning. But, during the middle of the night, I woke up. I looked at the alarm clock that was on the shelf and it read 11:30. I just remembered that it was a full moon so I hurried and got outside as quickly as I could but Spike heard me. He followed me outside and ran to catch up to me. It had just turned midnight when I turned. I had no clue that he had followed me so I started running and switched into my wolf form in mid air. I looked back and I saw him gawking at me. I ran away as fast as I could, hoping he didn't see me transform. When I returned, he was still standing there. I was in my human form by then. He saw me coming and asked me, 'What are you?' I played it off like  I didn't know what he was talking about. 'What do you mean?' I asked him. He shook his head at me and said, 'I heard you leaving so I followed you. When I saw you outside, a second later in your place was a wolf. How?' he asked me. I couldn't lie to him and so I told him all about me being a wolf and how on full moon's, you switch into your werewolf form whether you like it or not. He couldn't believe it. I thought he was going to go and tell everyone but he didn't. I trusted him, and he trusted me. 

The next morning, I went back to campus. There were people searching everywhere for something. I walked into the dorms and asked my friend, 'what's going on out there?' She says to me, 'Where were you?! Everyone's been looking everywhere for you!' I look at her in disbelief.  Out of the corner of my eye, I see Jarrod. He is so unbelievably gorgeus with those hazel blue eyes, and that short, choppy, black hair. I walk over to him. We still had a thing at that time and so I said, 'Hey baby.' He looks at me with disgust and sneers while walking off. 'Don't, 'hey baby' me. We are done!' Tears start to form in my eyes. I try to tell myself this isn't happening. I close my eyes and open then again and everything that I wished didn't happen, did. I tell him to wait but he didn't. I finally catch up to him and ask him what's wrong. He stops suddenly in his tracks. His eyes were full of anger and hatred. 'You wanna know what's wrong? Well here ya go. You go and tell me that you are going for a run and then you leave campus? You lied. Not only to me, but the whole school. That is breaking the rules Cara. And then you break another rule by talking to humans. I can smell them on you... Now get off my campus.' I stand there gawking at him. He says, 'You heard me.' And that was the last I heard from Jarrod; my first love. 

     When I left Campus, I went to Anthony's house. I told him what had happened and he let me live with him. Soon, we fell in love, got married, and had a baby girl. Her name was-"

I cut her off, "Caitlyn," we both say at the same time.

She looks at me and smiles. "Yes, it was you. But, when we had you, we had to keep it secret because it was against rules to marry someone and have kids with them if you are a wolf and they are a human." She stops to let me speak.

     "If you are a wolf, then how come you never told me? How come you always leave me when I need you the most? Why are you just now telling me this? Why didn't you tell me before? Are you telling me the truth?"

She says to me, "Of course, Caitlyn I am telling the truth. But when the wolves found out that I married a human, they gave me an antidote that made me stop changing into a wolf. No one is allowed to use that antidote unless they have broken one of the most important rules of all; marrying and having children with a human. We tried to keep it a secret; your father and I; but we couldn't. It was too much stress. And I'm so sorry I was never here for you. That was wrong of me. But with my career and all..." She trails off.

"I understand." I say to her. She looks at me like I'm joking.

"Do you really? I'm so sorry. I was to caught up in my singing and stuff. I was so stubborn...I still am. I promise I will be here for you if you ever need me." 

She has changed a lot. Before, it was all about her. Her this, her that. Now it was like she cared. Tears swelled to my eyes once more. I tried to hold it in but couldn't. They came down one at a time. My mom came over and gave me the biggest hug you could ever imagine. "I love you so much, Darling." I pull back to look her in the eyes. 

"Really?"

She gives me another big hug and says, "Yes, really."
