I felt the urge to plug my ears as I walked by the blaring fire alarm and out the door to the school. My hands stayed firm in my pockets, my elbows occasionally being hit by someone next to me piling out.
"Always hated these drills," Phil came up to me and said once we were all out.
"Er, yeah... me too," I awkwardly agreed.
"Guess they give us an excuse to leave class for a few minutes," he sighed and looked up at the cloudy grey sky. I nodded silently and pulled my jacket around me tighter.
Phil came up to me at lunch again. I was sitting under my favourite tree when he walked up beside me.
"Whatcha doin'?" He asked and took a seat next to me. I rolled my eyes to myself. Personal space much?
"Thinking, I guess."
"Where's your lunch?" He questioned.
"Don't have one."
"Aren't you hungry?"
"Nah," I lied.
He reached into his lunch bag.
"You like ham?" He handed me half his sandwich.
"Erm, yeah... thanks," I took it and tried not to devour it in one bite.
Neither of us said anything for a while, we just mindlessly sat there. I looked to my left and glanced at Phil, spotting something moving by his head.
"Uh... There's a spider by your head," I pointed out. He somehow jumped four feet forward from the trunk in a millisecond and squealed in the process. I stifled a laugh.
"Don't laugh, I hate spiders!" He defended himself and sat back down, this time away from the trunk.
The bell rang.
"I'll, uh, see you in science then?" He asked.
"Yeah," we both walked away.
It was a week before we spoke again. I sat in science class, tapping my pencil on the desk. The teacher up front was walking back and forth behind her desk carrying papers. Other students rambled about things I didn't care enough about to hear. Phil walked in hugging his books to his chest and took his seat across the room. I almost wanted him to talk to me, we hadn't spoken in a while. Not since lunch last Monday. He may have been the only friend I could get, and I shielded him off.
"Hey," a familiar voice said in front of me.
"Oh, hey Phil," I sat up, hiding my excitement.
"I have a question," he seemed nervous as he said it.
"Yeah?"
"So, there's this party at my house. My sisters birthday is Friday and were having a party Saturday to celebrate. I really don't wanna be the only boy there. I was wondering... would you like to come over Saturday?"
"Yeah! Im sure my parents won't mind," I smiled. Why was he inviting me? Surely he had other friends. Maybe they all refused...
"Okay," I could see he was happy. "Here's my address. It starts at seven so you can be there at about a quarter to." The bell rang and he said goodbye, rushing to his desk.
I haven't been invited to anything in who knows how long. Butterflies formed in my stomach, but I was also kinda excited. I read the note he made in my notebook.
7pm
4981 Riverbrook rd.
-Phil
I looked at the clock, it read 6:29. I rushed out the door while saying quick goodbyes to my parents. I pulled out my phone from the dark ages and checked the time. I had 10 minutes until 6:45. I hopped on the bus and took a seat by a window, watching for my stop. Phil's street passed by and I pressed the stop button. I climbed off and walked to his house.
The golden numbers on the brick fence read 4981. I took a deep breath and walked through the open gate. My phone said 6:57, fashionably late. I rang the doorbell. The front door was decorated with many colours of stained glass, forming an abstract design.
"Hey!" Phil opened the door. I stepped inside. His house smelled like hazelnut.
"Your house is huge," I breathed. The floors were polished dark oak and the walls were a light green decorated with wire sculptures and various paintings.
"That's your friend?" A girl I presumed to be Phil's sister asked. Her face was so covered in makeup I couldn't tell her skin colour.
"Got a problem?" Phil defended me.
She rolled her eyes and walked away.
"Sorry bout her. My rooms upstairs, follow me," he walked towards the staircase, leading me to his room.
He opened to door and we walked in. Even his room was gigantic. He plopped on his bed, I took my shoes off by the door and sat across from him. The mattress felt like a cloud compared to mine.
"So, what are we gonna do all night?" He asked me.
"I dunno," was the best answer I could come up with. He got up and looked out the window.
"Member one has arrived," he groaned. I looked out with him, spotting a car that looked like it cost a fortune. A girl stepped out and walked towards the house. I let out a small laugh.
It was about an hour later of mindless talking that we decided to go downstairs to see what was happening. Phil went first, trying to be unseen down the steps.
We were at the snack table where I grabbed a few small cookies.
"Hey," a girl giggled in my ear. I spun round, seeing a girl that had to be five years older than me. She was wearing a dress that was shorter than my shirt and her legs were almost orange with spray on tan. Her face was like a barbie with all the makeup she had plastered on.
"Er, hey..." I greeted her awkwardly.
"My friend thinks you're cute," she laughed behind her hand and walked away, more like skipped.
I looked at Phil and he was glaring at her as she stepped back into her group of friends. His face relaxed when he saw I was looking at him.
"That was weird," he said, breaking the awkward silence.
"Yeah..."
Before I knew it he was walking away, gesturing for me to follow. I jagged to catch up.
"Where are we going?" I asked out of confusion.
"To see if they took over every room of the house," we passed a room with a giant TV and chairs placed in front.
"Twilight," I said, seeing the screen. Phil just rolled his eyes and kept walking.
We stopped at a closed door. No light was on inside, so it must have been empty. Phil turned the knob and froze. The walls were lit by the flashlight of a phone and a group of girls sat around a bottle with two guys. The bottle was pointed straight at us and so were all of their eyes. Before either of us could say something, one of the girls said, "You wanna join us?"
"Uh, no thanks," Phil tried to shut the door but the girl jumped up and opened it back up.
"C'mon, just a couple spins..." she pouted. She dragged him in by his shirt. "You too."
