“The court finds the defendant guilty beyond reasonable doubt. I thereby sentence the accused life imprisonment.”

As soon as I heard the verdict, I walked out of the courtroom. I attended murder hearing similar to Mecy’s case. Prosecutor Estrellanes prosecuted the case and it was a victory for him. He’s one of the toughest prosecutors in town and has a ninety-five percent conviction rate. With my skills, I can win with the remaining five percent for Mecy’s case. But that can only be possible if I put Marko on the witness stand.

I stopped on the hallway to call mr. Go. I dialed his number and looked around if there is someone who can hear me. People are still in the courtroom and only the security officer is in the doorway.

“Ano?” bati ni mr. Go mula sa kabilang linya.

I think he has to fix his attitude towards me.

“Have you found anything that connects Marko to Theo?” I asked.

“How can we find something on him? Wala tayong mahahanap sa kanya,” giit niya. “Hindi siya ang dapat nating dalhin sa korte.”

“Just find something. Whatever it is,” I replied. “What about the address of Marko? Have you found where he lives?”

“Mr. Alternate Theory.”

I turned and saw Prosecutor Estrellanes who just walked out of the courtroom. Palabas na rin ang mga tao mula sa loob. Pinatay ko muna ang tawag.

“I heard you will be introducing an alternate theory again,” he said with, smirking. I can sense the satisfaction and arrogance in the tone of his voice. Of course, the accused whom he charged for murder was just convicted. “Baka hindi lang din tanggapin ‘yan ng judge gaya ng una nating naging kaso.”

Prosecutors are naturally arrogant, but defense lawyers are born competitive. He’s playing arrogant, I will gladly play his game.

“He will. I have something on my sleeve that is crucial to this case. Unfortunately, the incompetent prosecutor missed that during investigation,” I smiled playfully and put my hands in my pocket. To my satisfaction, his playful expression vanished. I walked towards his direction, and before I pass by him, I whispered, “Next time we talk, I’ll offer you something you wouldn’t be able to refuse.”

As soon as I entered my car, I called Mr. Go.

“You have to find something on him, and you have to find him,” I said as I started the engine. “No matter what.”

“Pero ang sabi mo, hindi si Marko ang pumatay kay Theo,” Mr. Go replied.

“Oo. Pero trabaho ng prosekyusyon na hanapin ang pumatay sa kanya,” sabi ko. “Our job is to prove our client’s innocence. And that is only possible if we have Marko."

Getting that Marko on the witness stand will not only prove Mecy’s innocence. He will be the key to put the bastard who murdered Theo behind bars.

“We were destined to save each other’s life, Mecy,” I said before I stand up and kiss her.

When my lips touched hers, my heart pounded against my chest. It was the same feeling I felt when we first kissed in front of the convenience store. The girl I kissed and the feeling she made me feel clouded my mind from that day on. Even when I was studying the law, she never failed to cross my mind and distract me for a while. I wasn’t sure if it’s because that kiss saved my life, or because I fell in love with her at that very moment.
