I woke up just after 9 the next morning to a text from JJ. "I had to go in to work. I should be done around 12. Love ya."
I figured that since JJ isn't here to bother me, I might as well make myself useful. I decided that I should probably clean up the house. I cleaned up all of the trash, mainly beer bottles and cans, from the living room, vacuumed the floors, and put a load of dishes in the dishwasher. Then I headed to the bathroom to wipe down the counters and scrub the toilet. I absolutely hate cleaning, but someone around here has to do it, and it's definitely not going to be JJ.
I got done cleaning around 11 and started getting ready for the day. I took a long shower and put on a pair of blush pink athletic shorts with a white strappy sports bra. I towel dried my hair and ran a brush through it. I sat down on the couch and pulled out my phone.
The front door flung open, whacking the wall next to it, making me jump. "Paisley, I'm home!" JJ yelled.
I looked over at him and yelled in an equally loud voice, "I'm sitting right here, dumbass!"
"My bad," JJ apologized, moving to sit next to me. "Do you want to go get something to eat? I'm starving," JJ complained.
"Sure, I'm hungry, too. Where do you want to go?"
"I mean, The Wreck is pretty good. It's close and you get a discount for working there," JJ responded, shrugging.
"That sounds good to me. Can we just walk over? Driving is too much effort."
JJ laughed in response. "If that's what you want to do, then sure."
I got off the couch and reached my hand out to help JJ up.
The walk was only 15 minutes, but by the time we got to The Wreck, both JJ and I were sweating. The humidity is unusually bad for this time of year. We entered the restaurant, and stood by the counter, waiting to be seated. I looked out into the restaurant and saw Braeden waiting on a table across the room. Kiara's mom came out of the kitchen, greeted us, and led us to a table. "Your server will be right with you," she said with a smile.
"Thank you," JJ and I replied in unison.
While we were waiting, I asked JJ if he'd seen anything worth getting excited over on the Bahamas news feeds.
He sighed and said, "No, I haven't seen anything yet, but I'm not going to give up," looking me intently in the eyes.
I just gave him a small smile. Braeden came up to our table. "Hey guys, how's it going? What can I get you to drink?"
I started blushing. I didn't think that he was going to be our waiter. I rolled the ends of my hair between my thumb and pointer finger and said, "I'll just have a water."
"Can I get a beer?" JJ asked, loudly. I stomped on his foot under the table and gave him a sharp look. "Ow, Paisley, fine, I'll just have a Coke."
Braeden laughed and told us, "I'll have those right out for you." He made direct eye contact with me and smiled brightly.
"Why did you have to step on my foot?" JJ hissed in a whisper.
"JJ, you're being dumb. Don't embarrass me in front of my friend," I replied.
"Pais, you and I both know that you don't just think of him as a 'friend.' It's really obvious that you like him," JJ said, too loud for the room we were sitting in.
"Shut up," I snapped in a sharp whisper. "He's coming, and he probably just heard everything that you just said."
Braeden set down our drinks. "Are you two ready to order?"
