The next week passed slowly. JJ and I both had to work long shifts every day, so we didn't get to see each other very much. The only time I really saw JJ was at night when he would come into my room to sleep. We were growing closer and closer by the day and the thought of hiding our relationship from John B was stressful and frustrating. We still had no idea how we were going to pretend that we didn't like each other.
That weekend, on Sunday, JJ and I both had a day off. I thought that we should go out and do something fun, instead of just sitting in the house all day.
I called Kie to see if she and Pope wanted to go do something with us. She suggested that we go bowling.
"I used to love going bowling, I haven't been in forever. That sounds good to me, but I need to check with JJ. He might not want to do that. He's been moody lately. I'll text you in a few minutes and tell you what he says."
"Okay, I'll talk to you later," Kie responded.
I went into the living room where JJ was staring at the TV. I could already tell that he was in a bad mood.
I sat down next to him and laid my head on his shoulder. He put his arm around me without saying anything.
"Hey JJ," I whispered. "I have a question."
He turned off the TV and turned to me, giving me his full attention.
"Okay, so I know that you're not really in a good mood today, but I was wondering if you wanted to go bowling with Kie, Pope, and me."
"I'm not in a bad mood, bug. I'm just tired as hell and stressed out." JJ paused for a second, playing with the ends of my hair. "Sorry if I've been acting like a dick, I'm not trying to."
"You're fine, JJ. I understand." I kissed his cheek. "So are you coming or not?"
"Oh yeah, I'll come. What time were you thinking?" JJ responded.
"Umm, let me ask Kie. She's the one that came up with this plan."
"Okay, well I better go take a shower," JJ said, getting up and heading toward the bathroom.
I texted Kie and told her that JJ was good to come, then I went to my room to pick out some clothes.
After about 15 minutes, JJ came into my room with a towel wrapped around his waist. "Paisley, I can't find any clean clothes. What the hell did you do with them?"
"Shit, I forgot to tell you," I said. I walked over to my dresser and pulled open one of the drawers. "I just put all your stuff in here. It's better than having it thrown all over John B's room."
"Thanks, Pais," he said, grabbing some shorts, a t-shirt, and a pair of underwear.
An hour later, Kie came to pick us up. Pope was already sitting shotgun, so JJ and I sat in the back together.
There was only one bowling alley on the island, and it was pretty janky. I think that I'd only been here, like, one time.
"What the fuck is this place?" JJ asked. "My dad's house is nicer than this shithole."
"Shut up, JJ," Kie and I said in unison.
"The building is just old," Kie said. "I used to come here all the time with my parents when I was little."
"Your rich parents used to bring you here to hang out?" JJ asked.
Kie parked her car and we all headed in the front doors of OBX Lanes. Pope held the door open while the rest of us filed in. After we paid, the four of us sat down at the table in front of our lane to put on our shoes.
