Hey, this is my first fanfiction so I hope you all enjoy it! Feel free to leave any feedback in the comments:)

I awoke to the sound of my alarm bleeping in my ear. I rolled over, smacked the button on the top and hid back inside my duvet. "Elsie, get up!" I heard my mother's footsteps as she made her way down the hallway. No. "Elsie, Now!" She said as she pushed open the door to my room and pulled my covers off me. I wrapped my arms around myself to try to keep warm since my blankets were no longer there to do so and slowly moved so I was sat on the edge of my bed. "I don't want to go." I said, standing up. "I know, but Grandma will look after you. Also, you never know, it could be fun!" She said, far too excitedly for my liking. "Canada? Fun?" I scoffed. "Yes, I lived there when I was your age and I had some great fun. Anyway, get ready or you are going to miss your flight." She said, leaving my room and slamming the door behind her.

I threw on some black skinny jeans and a hoodie so that I would be comfortable on this 5 hour flight from New York to Canada. Yay, fun. I put on some shoes and then headed to the door to say goodbye to my mother. "Hey, I'm going." I said, trying not to look upset. I was going to miss the city more than her. I knew she didn't care about me. If she did, she wouldn't be leaving me to go and live with her boyfriend in England. I wasn't even allowed to go. Instead I was being sent to live with my Grandma in Canada. She walked out of the kitchen holding a dish towel. "Text me when you get to the airport." She gave me an uncomfortable hug as I tried to escape. "Bye, then." She nodded as I opened the door to our apartment and left.

As I exited the elavator out onto the bottom floor of our apartment block, my only thought was that maybe Canada would be fun. Maybe I would actually meet people who would care about me. I walked out of the lobby doors and hailed a cab. Once the cab reached me I hauled my suitcase into the trunk and got in the back. "Where are you headed?" Came the voice of the cab driver up front. "JFK, please." As the cab began moving I thought about how much I would miss this place. The yellow taxis, the bright lights and even the millions of people that walked the streets everyday. I definately wouldn't miss my mother though, I couldn't. She won't miss you, said the voice in my head.

The cab arrived at the airport just as rain was beggining to fall so I quickly grabbed my bag and paid the driver before running inside. After I had checked in I grabbed myself a coffee and sat in the lounge, waiting for my flight to be called. "Flight CA1092 to Victoria International Airport please begin boarding at Gate 6, flight CA1092 to Gate 6." Said a woman's voice on the tannoy. Finally, I thought as I headed towards Gate 6. "The gate to my new life." I whispered under my breath, giddy from the coffee and laughing.
