Chapter 10 - Calloused

I sat up in the loft with my face in my hands, Amber at my feet. I ran my fingers through my hair and sighed shakily. I had been so kindly taken care of by the Clarksons but I couldn’t fall in love. I was a fallen, I had to do some good. Once that was accomplished I’d be pulled back to heaven, I couldn’t get attached. Even with Amber it was a risk.

I look at the wall in front of me, then to the digital alarm clock at the bed side, 3:47 AM it read. Work in two hours…

I lay back on my bed and look at my ceiling, I had to be calloused. I had to be rude. I had to make sure that Jade wouldn’t love me.

The next morning I walk downstairs looking a little messy and walk behind the cash register sitting on the stool and prop my head up with my arm. My eyes half closed as the early sun’s light filters in through the blinds.

A cup was placed in front of me as a shadow covers me. I look up to see a smilling Jade. “Hey, morning August.”

I was about to reply with ‘Yeah, good morning!’ but  bit my tongue and said nothing.

Jade tilts her head, “Is there something wrong?”

“No, nothing’s wrong, just leave me alone.” I snap looking up at her, glaring.

She looks taken aback but her face quickly turns into an angry glare, “Who woke up on the wrong side of the bed?”

I growl at her “What part of ‘Leave me alone’ do you want me to define for you?”

Jade huffs and spins around on her heel before walking across the store, I stare at the coffee she left and feel immense guilt but I sigh and focus on my work.

Soon, Mrs Clarkson came over to me and looked very pissed off. “I was told you yelled at Jade this morning, do you have any excuse or explanation to that?”

I very much couldn’t tell Mrs Clarkson, ‘Oh yeah I’m an angel and you see, I can’t become close to anyone because when I manifest away one day you’ll all be heartbroken!’ instead I said, “I just don’t feel like it’s a good idea to crush on my bosses daughter.”

Her face softened, “But August, we like you…”

“Well don’t Mrs Clarkson.” I say sitting up straight, “I’m just an employee and nothing more, I’m only here to get my job done. Take off rent from my pay check until I can find another place.” I sounded dull as I spoke.

Mrs Clarkson looked shocked but regained her composure, “Surely Mr. Jordan.” She says and walks off, leaving me to do my work as I stared at the now cold coffee on my desk.
