Chapter 38
Jae tried her hardest to resume back to her normal life in the few days that passed. Even though she hadn't heard much from Skye, she continued on as if he wasn't really there with her in the first place. It wasn't that hard considering Jae was used to being by herself but damn if she said it wasn't lonely as hell.
Her sight sometimes glanced groups of people in her class who interacts with each other as if it was the most normal thing in the world. Nothing could really be done about it anyway as Jae flicked the thoughts out of her head.
She'd sometimes send a text to Skye when she feels a pang of worry about him but as usual, there'd be no response. She went to her professor, Sir Wynter, once or twice to ask about Skye but he doesn't reveal much information. The second time, he said that he was sick and needed time to recover to which Jae accepted. At least she knows Skye wasn't avoiding her. Or is he?
All the while, she also tried to mend back her and Sam's friendship. She asked him to eat lunch with her a couple of times where they did their usual thing, albeit the atmosphere a little tense. Sam sat on the opposite of her, much to Jae's dismay. At least they were still on speaking terms. She'd take whatever she can get just so she wouldn't move further away from her best friend.
It was one of the days where Sera was home and Maggie was out late partying. Whenever Maggie informed her that she won't be spending the night, Sera jumped the chance to sleep at the apartment on Maggie's bed. Jae had always thought Sera did this so she wouldn't sleep alone in the apartment which she found kind of sweet.
Sera was in the kitchenette, putting away the take-outs they've finished eating. As she busied herself, Jae flung out the question that has been bugging her ever since they had that talk about her 'love life'. "Sera, how do you know Sam?"
Sera's shoulder tensed slightly, glancing towards Jae before drying out the dishes. "What do you mean how do I know him?" she asked, feigning ignorance. "I heard him from your stories and when I came to get you in his apartment."
Jae dismissed the tone in Sera's voice, pushing further the subject, "How'd you know his full name was Samael?" she urged. Her back was leaning against the wall as Jae sat on her bed cross-legged.
"I didn't know that," Sera responded as she kept up her act. Once she finished with the dishes, she began to open the kitchen cabinets, to try and distract herself from the conversation.
Jae tried once more. "You did. You said his full name back when I asked your opinion about boy stuff."
Sera sighed, giving up on whatever she was doing with her hands as she closed the kitchen cabinet. She headed to Maggie's bed, plopping down on the mattress with a hard thump as she sat face to face with Jae across the room. "I want to tell you my life story but... I don't know if Sam would approve. He hadn't mentioned me to you, right? Even though you're like his only friend?"
Jae nodded but still, her curiosity was welling up inside of her. "Please? I want to know. He's just- just so closed off sometimes. He never tells me things that bother him." Jae sheepishly frowned, "But you don't have to if it really needs to be a secret."
Sera pondered for a moment as she weighed her options. It wasn't like this information would hurt Jae or Sam. To be honest, Sera feels like Jae deserves to know. Especially if she'd one day date his brother. She has to know what she's getting into. "Fine."
Jae tried not to look too excited as she froze in place, her breathing paused.
"I'm his sister."
Jae's eyes widened slightly as her mouth hang ajar. She shut her jaw close in a second, trying to make sense of it. "Wait... you are? I thought he only had one older brother!"
