"Have none of you learned from your mistakes?!" I asked, not so nicely.
The Legends, Ava, and I had just gotten back from our latest mission. What happened that is so bad that I am yelling at my team? Well, Mick had a beer, Ray tried to get him another one, Nate and Amaya were as Gideon called it "dinky tickling", Ava and I were trying to take down someone who had attacked us, and Zari dared to ask what happened to get the team riled up. Then Mick lit a bunch of stuff on fire.
Ya. My oh so responsible team. "Sara, babe, it's fine. Chill. Take a breather." I did just as Ava instructed.
"Okay, everyone go to your quarters. I have somewhere I need to be. Ava's in charge, so don't blow up the ship." I kiss Ava then walk away, not ready to hear any questions as to why I keep leaving the ship. I'm not sticking around for that. So I got into the jump ship and made my way to Star City, 2020. Where I live is currently in my sister's apartment that she let me stay in before she died. Me and one other person.
I unlocked the door and stepped inside. "I'm back!" I announced to the almost empty apartment. I put my stuff away and walked to sit at the dining room table. "Hey mom, what's up?" Mom. Ya. That's the one other person. My daughter, Kailyn Laurel Lance. Age twelve. Birthday August 25th.
"Well, I would normally go on about how the Legends did something wrong but how I was interested on how they managed to screw it up, but then I look and see my daughter doing her homework without me. I am highly offended!"
"Sorry," Kailyn says with a laugh, "I just wanted to get it started because I thought you would be stressed over something." Of course she looks out for me. Sometimes I wonder how I raised someone like her.
"Of course you are looking out for me. But you are my daughter, I am your mother, I am supposed to be looking out for you. And I like how frustrated we get doing your stupid yet apparently useful homework that no matter who says what to me I still think is stupid." That got another laugh out of her.
"So how is Ava?" Kailyn asks. She asks about Ava everyday. And no, Kailyn is not Ava's daughter. While on Lian Yu, Anthony Ivo thought it would be oh so hilarious to chain me to a bed. You can guess what happened after that. A few months later I was founded by the League of Assassins. That's where I had Kailyn. I tried to keep her away from everyone but that got hard. It's hard to avoid thousands of people who are trained killers. When I came back to Star City, Laurel accidentally saw Kailyn and immediately knew that she was Kailyn's aunt. I had her promise to keep Kailyn a secret. Laurel agreed and insisted that we move in with her. Laurel helped raise Kailyn too. When Laurel died we pulled some strings so that Kailyn could see Laurel when she did. Kailyn took her death really hard but we both got through it together.
When I joined the Legends, I stayed overnight on the Waverider to not cause suspicion, but I also found a way to come home. At the time, Laurel would stay with Kailyn. Now sometimes when I do stay on the ship, I visit Kailyn until after she is asleep and I come back early in the morning, about an hour before she wakes up.
We made it a habit over the years to do her homework together. I had insisted. Every night we get frustrated with it, but we find a way to laugh about it afterwards. We have always had that kind of bond. Where we laugh at everything.
I never told the Legends or Ava about Kailyn. I guess I was just to scared. And nothing scares me. Accept Kailyn sometimes. Even as my daughter she can be scary when she sets her mind to something. It reminds me of her aunt Laurel. Laurel was the only family she had that wasn't me. My dad doesn't even know. Not Ollie, not my dad, not Felicity, not Dig. No one.
"Ava's pretty good. Ya, Ava's doing fine." I reply with a smile. She returns it.
"That's great to hear. I'm glad she's alright. And the rest of the Legends?"
"Good. Trouble and pains in my ass but good." We both laugh again, and continue the night like that- homework and homework and questions about our days and more homework. Just mother and daughter. Together. Always and forever, as we say.
