Aine was very lonely. She had no friends, because her mother never let her out of the house. She was already 17, for god's sake, and her mother still treated her like a child, claiming that she was too vulnerable in the outside world. Aine's mother believed in fairies! All this boredom was based on some stories. Her mother always blabbing about her first child being stolen by fairies, and she feared that all the children of the village would be kidnapped.  Believing in those nonsense had caused her family reputation to drop. However, Aine had enough of all this frippery. She would be 18 in a couple of months. So, she decided to sneak out at night and find out whether fairies existed or not.
Aine waited until everyone had gone to sleep, then she put on a cloak as dark as the night and ran to the nearby forest. Her mother had often said that there was a fairy ring in the heart of the forest. But, in no time, Aine was lost. She had no idea which part of the forest she was in, so she shouted, "If fairies exist, then proved that you exist. Appear in front of me and tell me, why did you take my sister!" She notice some light in the forest. "A sign of the fairies," she exclaimed. Once Aine found the source of the mystic light, she found herself on the edge of a lot mushrooms shaped in a ring, except right in front of Aine was a real, living, breathing fairy.
A real fairy! So Aine's mother wasn't lying. "Curse all those neighbours for shunning her and family, for gossiping that her mother was a mad woman, and curse herself, for not believing in her mother," thought Aine. She just couldn't contain her shock and anger and relief, so she screamed, "Why did you fairies steal my sister!" The fairy just looked at her calmly. She was glowing so brightly that it was hard to see her features. However, the fairy said, "You are wrong in many ways, my lady. First, we are not fairies, we are faeries. Second, we did not steal your sister. We knew she could live a better life, so we made her a fairy and brought her The Immortal Lands." Aine just stared at her. "Your lying! And don't call me my lady." The faerie replied, "I can't lie to you, my queen. And I can't not call you something you are." Aine was shocked. "I am not a queen." Except the faerie only said, "The prophecy of you being queen of Fairyland has been around for ages. They said that you would change Fairyland completely." The faerie paused for Aine to ask a question. "So what is the difference between a faerie and a fairy." "A faerie is wild, immortal and not a bit like humans. Our power are mainly nature-based, but some can create snow and ice. A fairy, on the other hand, in very human like. They don't live long lives, have weak powers and look like humans. They are humans with wings and a spark of magic. We are always at war against the fairies , comparing which of us are better. However, you are destined to make Fairyland great again. Not to win this war, but to step towards peace." Aine just replied, "Being a fairy queen does sound good, but I have to look after my family." The faerie just smiled, "You are Queen when you want to be one."and disappeared. Aine did not know what to say. However, there was on thing she knew. The sun was preparing to rise and she had to get back to bed. She ran quickly, careful not to trip. Than she slipped back to bed, before anyone noticed.
The next couple of months were a great joy. She enjoyed being in the company of her mother. She took care of her father lovingly.
Except the lovely time was not long.
On the day of her eighteenth birthday, Aine heard voices shouting for them to give up all their food and supplies. She heard the sound of weapons clinking when they met. Most importantly, she heard the sound of slicing and screaming.
The Saxons had invaded her village.
