Jesse's perspective
I could see her last breath condense in the midnight air and dissipate under the thin glow of a street light.
Neither of us moved.
A shadow elegantly whipped through the wind in a deafening silence, stepping towards the lifeless body like a hawk circling its prey. Except this was different, the prey was already dead, just an empty case.
Shit. Holy shit. If he sees us...
I was interrupted by Alani's gaze slowly turning to face mine, her grey eyes tinted with horror and fear, but glazed over with a strange sense of determination. Her lips were pursed together as if suppressing an inevitable cry out and her knuckles turned a bloodless white whilst her hands clenched into fists.
If he sees us, he won't hesitate.
I felt a strange surge of protection over the girl in front of me. Not in the same way as other people maybe. In the way that, if anyone was going to hurt her, it would be me. I wanted to hurt her. I wanted her to hurt me. She drove me insane. The more I saw, the more I wanted, but I enjoyed tormenting her too much.
The gunshot had sent rippling waves of ringing through my skull and the noise continued. It felt so loud in my own head I was almost afraid everyone else could hear it.
If he sees us, he will kill us.
The hunched figure blurred with the background as the black of the night crossed over the contoured edges of his clothing, gun still poised graciously in his hand, as though it belonged there. It looked all too familiar in his right palm.
I pushed my back into the cool wall behind me, the cold concrete was the complete opposite of my heated body. I felt like I could not have stood out more. Nevertheless, I slowly lifted my arm and tugged on my leather jacket draped on Alani's shoulders, pulling her back towards me.
She let out a gasp when her back touched the frozen building.
What if he heard that?
The mass of dark clothing shifted in the night abyss.
He could've heard that.
He turned slowly, in our direction.
He heard that.
I tried to bury my spine into the wall that only seemed to be thrusting us into the dim light.
Neither of us breathed.
Neither of us dared to.
Alani turned to face me, panic concealing common sense as her lips faltered, ready to scream.
No. No no no.
I put my hand over her mouth, as if it were soundproof. Her eyes flickered all over the place, I could practically feel the adrenaline seeping through her veins. She was scared, but a small glint in her eye told me she thrived off her own fear.
The figure rolled up his sleeves. A surprisingly casual act for a murderer, revealing arms covered in black ink, but he was too far away to work out any of the details. Arms covered in black and hands coloured in red, his eyes scanned the area.
His eyes shifted over the pavement.
Don't. Speak.
Along the wall.
Don't. Move.
Straight towards us.
Don't. Even. Breathe.
Silence descended, as his eyes skipped playfully over the shadows decorating the floor. Ever closer to us. So close. Too close. Straight over us. Continuing on into the darkness.
He missed us.
He turned away.
With that, he began to walk off into the distance, fading into the night. Only just giving me a chance to realise that my hand was still clamped over Alani's mouth.
Slowly, I pulled it off, the heat of her skin seemed to burn at my touch when I'd realised what I was doing, her lips were soft, her skin was warm. Despite the lack of danger, she was still tense. I brushed my fingers over her lips as I left her mouth uncovered, the edge of my hand sweeping over her nose.
Panic. It was all I could see in her eyes for a split second.
That split second interrupted by:
ACHOOOO!
Fuck.
He spun around, and began to run towards us.
He definitely heard that.
My legs seemed to freeze up, but we had to move, we had to leave.
Our lives depended on it.
"Run!"
