Double update! This might be the climax of the story. The answer to the trivia question is 1206. Enjoy the unlucky number Chapter 13!
There were only 3 minutes and 14 seconds left on my mental timer before the missles hit DC. There was a bomb inside the building, and it would blow up when the timer hit zero. The only way to overide the missles was to get to the control room. I raced towards there, but Erica stopped me. "No, Ben. I made a promise to myself that I would never lose you a long time ago." She said with an edge of fear in her voice. I gave her Stirling's joystick and told her that I will try to changd the power of the missles to this. "I know Stirling built in a backdoor to the missles." "Ben, no." Erica pleaded, but I looked her in the eye. "This is a save me or millions of other people situation." I said. "Ben, I want to save you." She said, tearing up. I kissed her, and whispered "I don't." I ran off.
There were only 2 minutes and 30 seconds left to save DC when I found the control room. I also unfortunately found the real, one-and-only Joshua Hallal. "Sh!t, I can't beat this guy in a fight!" I thought, and cased the hallway around me, looking to somehow get the jump on him somehow. The only thing I could find was a glass vase right next to the door. I grabbed it and threw it at the back of his head. It was a direct hit, cayching him off guard a momentary disorienting him. I took advantage of this and punched him squarely in the jaw, and he dropped like a bag of cement. I kicked him in the face 3 times, but he grabbed my leg. I almost lost my balance but took enough time to regain it so that he had time to get up. I dropped my shoulder and rammed into him, sending him flying across the room. Same peices of debris hit his head, and Joshua fired a bomb from his arm at me before losing consciousness.
The shot was high. It blew up the ceiling, causing large partd of it to come down. My left arm was crushed, making it numb. I only had 53 seconds left before the missles would hit their targets. The computer was already logged in, making my job easier. There were 7 missles altogether, and they each took about 5 seconds to overide, but I was running out of time. With 10 seconds and 1 missle left, my left arm just gave out because of the pain. I couldn't use it anymore, and I was struggling. I pushed enter on the last missle with a second left. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Then the building exploded.
Erica's POV
Ben kissed me and ran off. I was about to follow him when the 6 guards caught up to me. I pulled out the only gun I had (unfortunately a sedative dart gun) and fired at one of them. They slumped to the ground, but a well aimed shot took out my dart gun. I unleashed a fury of blows and kicks onto the guards, knocking the guns astray a knocking one guard unconscious. The remaining guard with a weapon shot my leg, but I didn't let that stop me. I knocked his gun away, and tripped him. I sent another to the ground writhing on the ground, and banged the others heads together. I ran from the other guard because I couldn't fight anymore.
I managed to lose the thug after climbing in an air vent, then began crawling toward the exit. I began to think about Ben, angry at him gor leaving yet heartbroken about his odds of survival. I was crying as I reached the exit. Stupid Ben I thought. Why are you so darn selfless? My joystick vibrated in my hand, and I flick upward so the missles went into the atmosphere. Right after the last missle, the building exploded with Ben in it.
I found the gang at at the entrance, some in tears. Catherine was the first to see me, and her face lit up. "Erica dear! You're alive! Now were is Ben?" She asked, and I broke into tears. "Oh." She said, and the mood lowered even more. I ran back to the pile of rubble, the gang right on my heels. There were 4 floors above Ben, so that was 4 more layers we had to dig through. I was the only one with the general idea were he was, but the tears overcame me. I knew that all the guards had evacuated the building before it exploded, so they were out of thd picture.
We had been digging for a while without finding anything. I wouldn't give up until I found some part of him. There were piles upon piles of stuff, none of Ben. I began to cry even more, and felt a hand on my shoulder. I thought it would be one of my parents, but it was Mike. He was the most hard-hit perdon besides me, and he'd known Ben the longest of any of us bu far. "I know how you feel." He said, and I let him sit down. "He's not dead." I said, not believing any of it. Now Mike was as optimistic as they come, but even he seemed skeptical. "Erica, you know the odds better than any of us." He said, and I got up.
I still continued to look for Ben, wanting to believe he was miraculously alive. Mike was right; I did know the odds better than anyone, because I was there. I was about to give into dispair, when I found a piece of skin. It looked like a finger, though I couldn't be sure. I moved the pile as round it, and the finger was attached to an arm.
But the arm wasn't attached to anything else. There was a leg a little ways away, but it was no hope. Ben was dead. I miss him far more than I did when I thought Joshua died. His soft, golden hair I would run my hand through all day. His green eyes that I woild get lost in for hours. His goofy smile and sparkling personality that made me fall for him in the first place. I would miss him more than anyone could imagine. Because the Ice Queen had thawed out into Benjamin Ripley.
That really hurt to write. It was very unusually sappy for me, but I can't keep my usual game show host persona. The trivia question is what is the EMP generator? I'm crying, so it was an easy question. Bye.
