Rey narrowed her eyes, sweeping the metal pipe back in forth, keeping the three thugs at bay. At least, she thought they were thugs. They were big with reddish skin and huge beefy necks and arms. But the problem was they had six arms. Rey had been backed against an alley wall and she was desperately trying keep the...creatures away. One of the thugs lumbered forward outstretching its arms. Instinct kicked in and Rey swing the pipe in a high arc, bringing it down on its head. He gave a grunt and melted into a pile of clay. This would have shocked any normal person but by now, Rey was used to things like this. Having taken down of them, the other two thugs seemed a little more nervous at approaching her. Rey flashed a smile and stood up a little straighter. She remembered her mother telling her something about animals being afraid of bigger opponents. Even though Rey was almost twice as small as the thugs, the act of standing taller must have really scared them. One of the brutes gave a cry that sounded like rocks tumbling down a hill. In the distance, Rey could hear answering cries. Great, she thought. More ugly dudes to deal with. Rey heard feet tramping towards the alley way. She could could count at least five pairs of feet heading her way. Rey crouched low, this was not the way she was going to die. As the monsters rounded the corner, Rey charged. She slashed and jabbed with her pipe. She ducked under flailing arms and dodged blows. After a few minutes, Rey looked around at eight piles of clay laying around her. She didn't know how she did it but she was just glad to be alive. There was no way she would get cornered in a alley again.
Rey made her way through the streets of Anaheim California. The hot summer sun pelted in her back and her torn shirt hung loosely on her slim frame. At one point during the afternoon, she thought she spotted a huge black dog as big as a horse, but then she blinked and it was gone. The sun began to slip down behind the buildings as Rey made her way to the outskirts of the city. It had been an exhausting day and she was ready for a good nights sleep. She glanced across the street and saw a fire escape about twelve feet off the ground. Rey ran across the street and leaped upwards. She grabbed onto the metal railing and swung up and over it in one swift movement. Rey even surprised herself. She had always been good at athletics but she felt like she shouldn't have been able to do that. She shivered trying to rid her mind of the thought. As the stars began to appear in the sky, Rey climbed the rusted stairs to the roof of the building. She climbed over to some cardboard boxes and flattened them down, making a makeshift mattress. She flopped down on it, her bones aching from escaping from monsters all day. She stared at the billions of stars winking down at her. She sighed and tried to rid her mind of her memories of the past couple months. Every night when she couldn't keep her mind busy, the memories entered her mind. They seeped in without warning and caused Rey restless nights. Tonight, the were especially vivid. Reys mind wondered to the nights she spent with her mom at their small house in Oklahoma. Rey and her mom used to climb up on the roof of their home and stare at the stars. She would tell Rey stories of the olden days or battles she had fought in. But there was one thing she always said.
"Rey, no matter what your doing or where you are, you should know that up there with the stars are forces that are always watching over you. They will always be there even when I'm not." The thought of her mother's voice caused Rey's heart to crack. Her brain fast forwarded to the night she had left. Rey and her mom had just climbed down from the roof and were settling down to sleep when they heard strange noises from outside. Rey stared at her mom and asked "mom, what is that." Molly shook her head and whispered, "I've only heard that noise once before..." her mom grabbed her pistol and stood behind the door. "Rey," she said with a hardened voice. "Get into my room and to the window. Once their in the house you need to run."
"Mom, I'm not leaving you." Molly turned to her and gave her a soft smile. "Oh Rey, I only knew it was a matter of time before they came for you. I know this is going to be hard but you must leave. You have to fight this battle alone." Rey backed into her moms room and raced to the window. She didn't know what was going on but her mom was obviously scared. She heard the front door crash down and Rey peered around the corner of the door. Her mom fired her pistol as two snakelike ladies slithered into their house. One of them sank their fangs into her moms arm and molly immediately collapsed. Rey bolted to the window and wrenched it open. She dove out the window and began to run. She didn't know where she could go. She hadn't been able to process what had happened then, but now the memory replayed in her head. Rey was brought back to the present and felt hot tears slide down her face. She stared at the stars again wondering if her mother was dead. It was her fault if her mom was dead. Rey glared at the stars trying to find someone to blame even though she knew it was her fault.
"Why!" She shouted at nothing In particular. "Why me?" She sobbed into her elbow. The only person that had cared about her had been snatched from her life. The stars twinkled as if they were laughing at her. These stars were different the ones back home. The ones in Oklahoma were warm and full of hope. These were cold and didn't care if Rey survived or died. The past weeks had been so hard and she hadn't found a time to let out all her sadness, anger, and fear. She lay there on the roof of a run down building crying over her mother and screaming at whoever had been cruel enough to torture her like this. Eventually, Rey fell asleep of pure exhaustion.
