The car ride home was lighthearted, and by the time we reached my door, Mark had me in stitches. I leaned against the doorframe and smiled.
"Today was fun. Thank you again, for all your help." Mark rubbed the back of his neck and shrugged.
"No problem. I really enjoyed getting to know you."
"We should definitely hang out more."
"Yeah.." Mark shuffled awkwardly, adorably trying to think of what to say. Then, a thought crossed my mind.
"Here." I fished through my purse for a piece of paper and a pen, then scribbled down my new phone number. "Text me some time. Like if you want to hang out. Or, just talk even." His smile grew wide and his face reddened.
"Can do." Mark gave a sort of bow and stepped toward his apartment. "Well goodnight m'lady. If you ever need anything I'm right across the hall."
"Sure thing," I smiled. "Goodnight, Mark."
I closed my door and leaned against it for a moment, still smiling. The butterflies still fluttered as I thought about him. I hadn't felt like this in a very long time.
-----
In the weeks since that first day, Mark and I had spent a lot of time together. Between the two of us, loneliness or sheer boredom lead one to cross the hall and bother the other nearly every day. But somewhere along the line, the awkward knocks and careful texts evolved into open doors and comfortable conversation. We had become close friends without even realizing it. As cheesy as it would sound, it felt like Mark and I had been friends all our lives. On lazy days, the two of us would watch movies or play games, and sometimes one of us would fall asleep on the others couch by accident. It was just... comfortable.
"Have you seen this one?" Mark held up a DVD that seemed to be the single embodiment of eighties horror flicks. I shook my head and smiled at him.
"No, I haven't. Put it in, I'll go make popcorn." I stood from the couch and ventured into the kitchen to find the delicious movie snack. Mark meanwhile tossed an obscene amount of blankets and pillows on the couch, as our ritual dictates.
If a movie is ever too scary, we could build a fort of safety out of the blankets. Plus, it made passing out after a movie much more comfortable. When I returned with a large bowl of popcorn and two glasses of water, Mark turned down the lights and started the movie. We situated ourselves next to each other on the couch, close enough to grab each other when we got nervous, but not so close that someone could get punched in the event of a really effective jumpscare. At this point, we had scary movies down.

As the credits began to roll, I sleepily nuzzled into Mark's side. The movie had actually been very tame, and I had nearly fallen asleep toward the end. Mark chuckled and put his arm around my shoulders, gently hugging me close. I smiled up at him, ready to make a joke about the movie, but stopped when I realized how close we were. His warm breath mixed with mine, and for a moment, I was lost in his hooded eyes. He brought a hand up to my chin, and inched closer. Our lips brushed each others, and in that moment he paused, waiting for a reaction. I took this as an opportunity to wrap my arms around his neck and lean into the kiss. His lips gently worked against mine, and before I knew it we were tangled in each others embrace. My heart skipped several beats, leaving me lightheaded when he pulled away. I blinked a few times before smiling at him again, burying my face in his neck. Mark chuckled and wrapped his arms around me, holding me close as we both drifted off to sleep.
