He was all she could see.
There was nothing else, no one else, around her.
Just her and the psychedelic wave of colors swimming before her eyes.
"It's a lovely name. Really suits you."
And his voice, his indescribable voice melding into the deep, cacophonous bass tones thrumming from the cabinet's speakers.
YN felt like she was dreaming, and she didn't know whether it was a nightmare or the most incredible dream she'd ever had.
A face, like a child's drawing only with unsightly lines and a twisted expression, flashed into view just at the edge of YN's right eye, and she let out a nervous whimper.
"Don't be scared, YN. Nothing here is real except you and me."
"Who...who are you?" YN murmured warily, never talking her eyes off the game or pausing her movement of the controls.
"Take a wild guess."
She was sure it was the game itself talking to her, and though his voice was strange, as you'd expect a talking machine to sound, it was strangely...comforting. She felt safe here on this alternate plane.
"Polybius?"
"Yahtzee. Just kidding, you got it right the first time." He chuckled, a loud, raspy, electronic sound. "I've been waiting for a chance to talk to you, YN. The thought of meeting you again really made devouring the bland brainwaves of these past few bubblegummers worth the wait."
"Why me?" YN asked, bewildered. She could hardly understand what the machine was talking about, though the initial shock of hearing Polybius speak in the first place had subsided.
"Well..." He seemed to pause and think for a moment before answering her. "...I'm not too sure myself. But I do know one thing. You, YN LN, have some powerful thoughts. Exactly what I was created to find. And I've still barely scratched the surface of your brain. It's almost like you're a computer yourself, with encryption methods in place and everything. Gets me all warm and sparky inside."
YN blushed at his praise, though she wasn't sure why she was receiving it. She felt drawn to the voice inside the machine, for some strange reason. "Why are you telling me this?'"
Polybius said nothing, but the game's background noise increased in pitch.
"WAVE 3: BEGIN."
